My chow gets skin infection

My last and present chow always have skin problem. Is it that chow chow gets skin infection very easily? He's biting himself and scratching non-stop, I had to put a collar on him now, but this doesn't solve the true problem. The vet told me to give him food with lower protein(less than 22%) I am, but he's still scratching. Does anyone know what's causing this? Any cure?

Re: [Bubbles] My chow gets skin infection

Dear Bubbles,

Maybe the shampoo and conditioner that u're using r not suitable for your chow chow. How often u bathe your chow? The most is once a week.If u bathe too much, the skin might get dry and it will irritate your dog.Try not to let your dog to scratch itself too much and cut it's nails(to prevent injuries).

U check your dog for fleas and ticks?

Re: [Bubbles] My chow gets skin infection

Hi Bubbles,

I think skin infection is a normal problem for chow-chow. They are actually not a tropical country kind of dog. I have a colleague who used to own a beautiful chow-chow but the dog died recently due to skin disease which got too infected until the vet says it's better for the dog to let him go to sleep foreverUnsure.

cheers,
minglmy

Re: [timmy] My chow gets skin infection

Hi,
I trry not to use too much chemicals for my Trivor. I fried garlic and feed her once a month to control fleas and ticks. Garlic is excellent to get rid of those nuisances.

Re: [Bubbles] My chow gets skin infection

well,
I agree with adamchooi, chekc if your chow-chow has fleas/ticks. these are deadly insects. This can cause worm to your doggie too.
what did the vet said?

Re: [timmy] My chow gets skin infection

Dear timmy,

I dilute Cookie shampoo with water before applying it.Try not to use it straight away out from the bottle. It's not good to shampoo your dog too frequent coz it will make their coat and skin dry and itch. That's y we can only bathe our dog at most once a week.

U can try Medicated shampoo or there r alot other shampoo used to kill fleas too.I don't use any of those because i'm using Frontline on cookie. As trivor suggested,u can feed timmy with garlic as well(But not too much).

Re: [adamchooi] My chow gets skin infection

Hi adam,

I've tried a few types of shampoo for puppies on Richie the last time, but he seems to be allergic to it or something...always scratching. And I noticed that when I use those on him he tends to smell a bit.

Got a tip from a friend (not sure if all u puppy lovers agree or not) Smile I dilute baby bath gel into warm water and I bathed Richie (and now Sparkle) with it. I noticed their skin don't get dry and they don't scratch so much and they smell just like a baby!!Smile Smile Plus I feed Sparkle with NutriCoat which is supposed to condition the skin.

Andn garlic of course - in very very small quantities. Smile

Re: [cshellz] My chow gets skin infection

hello,
I was told we cannot use human bathing gel or soap on doggies as it will dry up their coat and skin?
I also was told to use bathing gel consists of oat bran, it supposes to smooth the skin and as natural conditional. But I can't find any shampoo consists of oat over here....

Re: [Trivor] My chow gets skin infection

adult ones are definitely too harsh on them. But I'm using the ones we use on newborn babies to toddlers. I only mix a little into the warm water. The baby's soap also will dry up coat and skin??

What shampoo do u use on your dog by the way? Smile

I dunno the brand name but it has yellow label and the shampoo is brown in colour.
sometimes I put some pounded oat on my hand when rubbing Trivor ... but I've done it once, not sure the effect too. My mum will yell if I use the oat for her bathing...

Re: [cshellz] My chow gets skin infection

Hi Michelle,

Baby bath? Izzit the blue colour bottle by johnson's? I used to like it alot when i was a little boy(lots of bubbles).

The pH level for human skin and dogs r different. So it's not advisable to use human shampoo on dogs. But baby shampoo should be ok i guess cos it's mild and less concentrated.

Re: [adamchooi] My chow gets skin infection

err...not johnsons. My mum got me this baby bath gel that smells of pineapple. It's supposed to be for babies and it's with aloe vera gel that's supposed to moisturise skin. It says here dermatologically tested and pH balanced....and soap free.

I dun mind sticking to it as I use only very little mixed in warm water and I can see his skin improving when I stopped using the puppy shampoo. Smile But I'll never use adult shampoo or bath gel on my puppy.

But thanks for the infor adam!! Wink Smile

Re: [adamchooi] My chow gets skin infection

I only bath him once before the problem appear. I'm usin Bio-groom, is it good for puppies? It doesn't state that it is specially for puppies, but the pet shop guy says it's alright. He has no fleas and ticks, I've sprayed the Frontline and put a flea collar on. But the vet said it's not flea problem, it's skin problem, and had given him some tablets. I had never had a dog who would take tablets so pleasantly.

How much garlic? How to fry? Dry or with oil? But my dog has no fleas now, it's still ok to feed him? Will it make him smell?

Re: [Bubbles] My chow gets skin infection

is your chow start scraching, then biting , then the whole spot started hairless, reddish?
well my chows too even my golden does that.
My vet couldn't provide me the exact answer that cause this infection, it might be heatie weather or bacteria. But what i always do is shave off that spot, appllied the cream that my vet gave and also season them with malaseb for half an hour then rinse for twice a week until he stop bothering that spot.
well this works for my chows and golden.
you should always smell their body, the best every day to check for skin infection.
