Diet of MS

Hi, All,

Happy to know that there are getting more and more MS owner registered to this forum Smile .

Can MS owners here share with us how and what you feed your MS, with only dry dog food, kibbles? Or Home cook? Or Barf? For the home cook owner, can you please share with us your recipe for your MS? Is Barf good for MS? If you mixed other food into the kibble for your furkid, what do you mixed in? For me, I have tried boiled chicken beast, boiled egg, boiled carrot, boiled potato and peanut butter, and my baby like only boiled chicken breast and boiled potato.

So many questions ah ! Wink I am now really headache for my pup's diet. Yippi now is bored with his dog food. He tasted human food before and love to eat the human food. I would like to stop him from eating the human food and feed him only with the dog kibble. So now I feed him with only kibbles. Dog biscuit and tibbits only for rewarding. Sometimes I will mixed in boiled chicken breast, boiled potato or boiled carrot into his kibbles, but he will finish the food only after he was hungry for a day, so pity Unsure . Knew that barf is good for dog but still not brave enough to try… want to cook for him but scare that the over cooked food is not easy for him to digest... Unsure So, write this post to get some of your experiences in feeding your furkid Smile.

Thanks and Best Regards

Eliza

Re: [elizatye] Diet of MS

Hi Eliza,

From day one, my MS have been on dry dog food. Started with various brands but mostly stuck with Lamb and Rice cos somehow their fur seems better, shiner. They are fed twice a day, mornings and evenings. In between meals, sometimes they are given treats like raw carrots, fruits, Gardenia Bread..nothing too fattening. Only if they are having tummy upsets, then we fast them for a day, and give boiled chicken breast meat the next day before going back to the normal dry kibble once everything is back to normal. Table scraps of human food are a no-no to them.

Re: [arthur] Diet of MS

hi there....

in my opinion, a gd diet is essential for well bring of a healthy dog, and critical for a sick dog. From feeding commercial diet, to partially homecooked, to raw diet. I can see the transition of my two gals. Kimba unfortunately suffered an autoimmune mediated problem which almost cost her life twice. she wnt thru two blood transfusion. As the immune is hay wire. we can only rely on her body to adujst and heal properli.

The first time she was so ill that she has shed 3kg, tht's almost half her weight for a small dog, i onli see skin covering the bones. She was on 50% commercial diet and 50% homecooked. the vet said it must be her diet that is helping her along. Most dogs give way at her condition. She has recovered well. The first attack in Mar 02

I keep her diet reali holistic, no drugs etc, on raw diet plus homecooked fish such as salmon, cod, garoupa etc. She is doing well till i put frontline on her. The 2nd attack came, she hemorrage thru peeing out blood... reali blood, no pee.. in less thn 24 hrs, she is almost drained of blood. we wnt thr another blood transfusion for her. Tht buy her some time to find the correct treatment. The vet manged to save her again with the correct medication. This round she is on heavy dose of steriod and immuno suppressant. We did CBC (complete blood count) test weekly to determind her white blood count etc. This round, she neber really lost any weight:)

thru the abv two episode,i truly believe a gd diet can make a difference between life and death:) all healthy dogs survive quite well on commercial diet, try feedin that to a sick dog, or one with a weaker body...

Re: [robee] Diet of MS

Hi Veron,

I would not like to go thru what you have gone thru with Kimba. She's one very plucky girl indeed. This Auto Immune Diease is terrible. Other than passing blood, is there any other symptons we should be aware off?

I have read your posting in the SCS forum on what you feed your furkids. So what are the improvements you have seen or observed since switching from commercial to raw diet? Robee does not have this health problem. Did she benefitted from going to the raw diet as well? (BTW, do you reckon Frontline triggered the relapse in Kimba?)

Thks for sharing your experiences with us. I'm sure all MS owners here will be following this thread with interest.

Re: [arthur] Diet of MS

y is frontline suspected to be the culprit...... after kimba's recovery, no drugs has been administered into kimba except frontline a mth ago.... n skin is the largest organ, they cn absorb all the gd things, oso all the bad things, accumulation of toxins in the dog's bodi is the key. Some might onli see adverse reactions after a few application when the level of toxins reach intolerence level. If it cn kill hardy pest like ticks, how poisonious cn u imagine the drug to be.

Oh yes, one more thing, doesn't mean it doesn't happen now, it doesn't happen later... thr is always a tolerence level.

Auto immune mediated diseases can appear in several form, kimba's one is suspected
Autoimmune hemolytic anemia.

http://www.geocities.com/aihadogs/

Extract: "
It is important to realize that having an AIHA dog requires a TOTAL commitment. Not only will this disease require a lot of time, but the emotional and financial burden can be great. The medications can be quite expensive and added to the veterinarian bills, can become overwhelming. You will need to adjust your schedule around visits to the vet and administering medications. The financial burden and time limitation are insignificant compared to the emotional roller coaster you will be on. This is a disease that can be controlled, but there is no cure."

I must said the praises on how shiny and healthy and happy looking my gals are the results of a healthy diet. Everything they see the gals, they will asked wht diet are they on etc. I have no problem givin them kibbles if i m reali too buzi. If your dog can eat raw, it can eat anything, like a dustbin.

Re: [robee] Diet of MS

Hi V,

So far my MS have no adverse reaction to Frontline. But like you said, it could be accumulative. My vet told me that Frontline works by going under the skin so that when the tick bites, it'll ingest the Frontline as well thereby killing it. Nowadays when the tick season comes, we use a repellant which is sponge onto the fur after a bath. Quite effective too.

My furkids can eat almost anything I throw at them so far. Only bananas are a no-no cos' they'll throw up later. Maybe one day I'll try them on something raw. Would you recommend a simple recipe for a trail, introductory raw diet?

Re: [robee] Diet of MS

Raw meaty bones: duck bones, chicken bones, meanin the wings, necks, backs, etc, oxtail, lamb ribs As our dogs are small breeds, they don't have a variety as wide as bigger breeds

Meat and offals: mutton, lamb, duck, chicken, beef, livers, gizzards etc For offals, i prefer to use chicken or duck ones

Veges: all types of leafy greens, pumpkin, carrots etc.... i give at least 4 types of veges at a go.

Fruits: seasonal, banana, mangoes, apple, etc

The only stuff that i cook is fish, which is salmon, garoupa, codfish, prawns etc........

Supplements i add in: kelp, alfafa, ACV and garlic.....................

They are given Vit E, evening primrose, omega 3 and colostrum, once or twice a wk.

Re: [stephee78] Diet of MS

Stephie!

I feed my Lee Ron boy about 1 cup a day divided into two feedings, 1/2 cup in the mornings, and 1/2 cup in the night. In between, I sometimes give him snacks like fruits or at most 1 doggie biscuit only. Schnauzers are notorious eaters and will gladly stuff themselves fat if we do not control their diet.

Try it and see. Oh yes, I forgot.. you can try to switch to adult food with a lower protein content. Puppy food is about 29-30% protein. Adult is about 26-28% range. At Gary's age, he can go off the puppy formula (for small breeds this is okay, not for large breeds)

Re: [arthur] Diet of MS

Hi, Arthur,

Means, I can slowly switch yippi to adult foods lah ??? Now I only feed Yippi once a day with kibbles, only for his dinner. I will mix 0.5 cup of kibbles, boiled potato, boiled carrot and small amount of purina bacon. In the morning, I will feed him with his favorite, dog biscults, appro 6-8 per day. I don't know whether this is a good diet for him but I really don have time to prepare food for him in the morning. He won't take in any dry kibbles until I back from work Frown.

Do you feed you furkids any supplementary???

Thanks and Best Regards.

Re: [elizatye] Diet of MS

Hi Eliza,

Yippi is soo lucky to get 6-8 dog biscuit a day! Pepper, Lee Sha and Lee Ron are soo jealous cos' their dada only feeds them 1 biscuit a day.Unsure

Seriously, all my furkids will gobble up their morning 1/2 of dry kibble like vaccum cleaners. No fuss from them on eating. Same thing goes for the night feed. That comes only after their obedience training sessions in the evening and after we have eaten.

For Yippi, you can switch to adult food now. He's >6mths now right? In the morning, why not give him more raw carrots rather than dog biscuits. Healthier in the long run. The only supplementary food I'm feeding them now is the "IN" brand (comes in nugget form) and vitamin "C".

Hi, Arthur,

Actually I do hope that yippi will gobble up his kibbles like vaccum cleaner too, like your furkids. Will try your suggestion, feed yippi with raw carrots too in the morning.

Ha~~~i, Yippi will have his CGC test next week, but the percentage for him to past the test is not more than 10 % Unsure. Yippi can do the things well at home but always very excited during the class, jumping over here and there. Not pay any attention at all during the class Unsure. Notti boy...

Hi Eliza,

Yippi must pass his CGC! Why? cos' so far to my knowledge, no MS has ever failed his/her CGC before! Sly So you must train harder with Yippi to uphold the tradition. Should not be a problem cos our MS are very smart doggies right? (Wah..sounds like applying pressure..Shocked)

Re: [arthur] Diet of MS

Dear Arthur,

need your advise on Pepperboy's diet. He's almost 6 months old now and is still on Ekunuba's Small Breed ( 4 tablespoon - 2 feedings daily) .In between, my family members tend to give me scores of Purina Dog Biscuits. This stopped when I came home for CNY after reading the posts here. He's is slowly developing a tummy.

Should I switch him over to Ekunuba's Premium Performance or Lamb and Rice at his current age now? I was also told that there were different sizes to the feed ( kibbles, I believe you'd call them )

I have gotten so many opinions lately that I'm confused... I really need your help..Can you also recommend any form of supplements which I could also use?

Thanks a million and Pepperboy thanks you too

Re: [hcyeap] Diet of MS

Hi HCYeap,

So Pepperboy is 6mths old already? So they grow up so fast. Unsure

Anyway, to answer yr question..You can start to switch Pepperboy to an adult diet now at 6 mths. A Lamb and Rice formula has worked out good for my MS so far. I noticed their fur is shinnier and skin has less problems when on a Lamb and Rice diet. I have tried Chicken - not so good, coat becomes dull..Turkey - worse, hair loss (stay away from turkey!!).

For meal portions, stick to half a cup (the one you get free from the petshop when you buy their petfood) once in the morning and half a cup at night. In between, limit the treats to only one doggie biscuit and subsitute with raw carrots if he really needs to snack a bit more. Tell the family not to feed Pepperboy so much..he will always be hungry..he's a schnauzer after all!!Wink

For training, I use part of his daily portion as treats. That way you know he's not being fed extra.

For supplements, I use IN - a pellet type for coat and 2-3 times a week of vitamin C tablets..This is to control their saliva pH value so that they don't stain their beards red too much.. Seems to be working for my MS.

And oh yes!..I was told that Ekanuba will lighten dark coats and darken light coats. I have since switched to First Choice and noticed a marked improvement in the coat colour especially for PepperGirl and Lee Ron. PepperGirl's coat colour has turned to an almost black shade. Just something for you to consider. And unless you are training for demanding stuff like agility training, premuim performance type of foods are not necessary..the adult or adult maintenance type will be sufficient. (This is just my opinionSmile)

Hope the above helps and give Pepperboy a big hug from me.

Dear Arthur,

thanks for your great advise...

will start looking for the items tomorrow. I did often wonder why Pepperboy had such a red beard when all others in the pictures did not...

I know that I would probably never subject Pepperboy to the standards of a Show Doggy... but do like the idea of him in an Agility trial some day.

Your advise has really put a rest to my concerns.

How's LeeRon's Harley suit coming along...have you managed to get his set of doogles yet...?

ps: there were only two MS in the Penang Beach Gathering...wish your MS gang were there too; Pepperboy would have loved to have more Swim buddies. He's a regular water baby....

Re: [elizatye] Diet of MS

Hi Eliza,

I was so looking forward for Pepperboy to meet Yippi. Maybe next time.

I am not sure about throwing our furkids into the sea. Oh sure, all dogs can swim but they may not like it and will probably hate the sea afters.

I first carried Pepperboy in with me so that he is not frightened by the crashing tide. He too was so nervous that he was trembling in my arms. He kept on swimming back to shore. I kept callling out to him and when I was just about to give up, he jumped in and swam out to meet me. Now he will usually waits until the tide moves back before rushing in, otherwise the wave will bring him crashing back to shore which is a vey funny sight indeed.

I'll be back to Penang on the 23th to bring Pepperboy to his first class and very possibly take him out swimming. Hope to meet you there.

Yippi looks so cute in your pics. Pepperboy says hi.

Hi, HCYeap,

Thanks. I know what to do already next time I bring Yippi to the beach.

You will bring pepperboy to the training class in Japanese Garden too, great. I am sure you know that both of our trainers are own Schnauzers too, both of them own more than 1 MS. So you can exchange experience with them. And yippi shouldn't be lonely with a new friend in the same breed. Previuosly Yippi is the only Schnauzer in the class... Hope to see you and pepperboy soon.

Re: [elizatye] Diet of MS

Hi Eliza,

when Pepperboy was only 7 weeks old. I was told that Eagle Pack was the best for him and that I should slowly change his diet from Ekanuba Small Breed to it. It did not agree with him so how and I almost lost him. He kept on throwing up and was so weak that he couldn't even stand up. After frantically seeking opinions from almost every vet in Pg, I finally tried SD as which seem to work.

Later on, I was told that SD was corn-based and was not as good, hence I switched him to one tablespoon of SD ( paste type ) and three tablespoon of Ekanuba. I had no further problems after that until my last recent post which Arthur gave some very good advises.

Pepperboy was a very dark Salt and Pepper dog and lately, he has become very light in colour and the only reason for it is definately what Arthur wrote about Ekanuba. I'll be switching him to Lamb and Rice for the next three months and then later to First Choice for a start.

Thought that I can share this with you.

Re: [arthur] Diet of MS

Dear Arthur,

sorry to bother you again...

I wasn't able to locate the particular brands of food and vitamins in Penang. Could you share with me the location of the shops you pick up your supply from in PJ or KL. According to his mummy, Pepperboy is really lightening up in fur colour and the body area which he occasionally like to chew on is getting to be red as well. I often check out those spots to look for sores or ticks, but there is no sign...may just be an itch or a bad habit. So, I am definately taking off Eukanuba ASAP and getting him on the vitamins as well.

The other thing is his fur. He is does not have a thick hair coat than many of them which I have seen in the pics. Is it because of his age, his genes or something I'm doing wrong.

Thanks

Re: [hcyeap] Diet of MS

Hi, HCYeap,

I give Yippi the IN brand supplements for coat and skin that Arthur mentioned bf, and the biscuit to reduce the odor and bad smell of our fur kids mouth and poos. I had give him a type of plant oil that recommend by the pet shop, a supplement for coat too, but I can’t remember the brand already, will let you know next week. But I didn’t give him Vitamin C.

Red beard, yes, yippi have a bit. But before that, I thought that it is normal for all the schnauzer to have this colour in his/her beard Frown. Is Vitamin C really help, then I will try to get it for Yippi.

Anyway, thanks. If I really require anything in KL, I will call you for SOS ...

Re: [hcyeap] Diet of MS

Hi HCYeap!

Sorry for the delay in replying. Mucho workload and all..Unsure

I buy the First Choice from a pet shop in SS2, PJ ( Petshop). It's located at the same row with all the goldsmith shops. As for Mrs.Chui (friendly lady, shop owner) If you have problems getting it, let me know. I can grab a bag and meet up wz you later before yr next trip back to PEN.

Another brand which I heard is good is California Natural. The Lamb and Rice version has a very short ingredient list..which translate into fewer preservatives. I may try this out later.

Licking of paws can be either a sign of irritation due to foreign bodies like ticks, thorns etc..OR it could be a sign of boredom as well. To break a bad habit, I have been advised to soak the paws or other areas with a diluted solution of white vinegar and water. The vinegar would definitly discourage further licking with a side benefit of whitening action as well. Have not tried this yet so I cannot vouch for it...yet.

As for fur and coat colour, its mainly genetics. Diet of course can help but it mainly predetermined. I find the IN supplement does help to promote hair growth to a certain extent.

Generally if Pepperboy is on a diet that keeps him active, eats normally, has clear eyes, shinny coat, firm stools..that's the diet that works for him. Not necessarily any specific brand.

Dear Arthur,

thanks for your advise and your kind offer. SS2 is close to where I am currently residing and I should have no problems picking it up.

Like I mentioned in my earlier post, I am only worried about the availability of his daily consumption in Penang but now with a better variety, I am confident that my problems can be solved.

Would very much like to meet up with you someday and thank you personally for your great advise and possibly chat about other hobbies as well ( IT and Camera etc etc ) Incidentally, I have noticed that Pepperboy is bored and harpering on the idea of getting him a GF soon. Notice a couple of Advert in the Star today for MS pups. May check out this leads after office hours today.

Re: [Riccaval] Diet of MS

Hi Derrick,

I have been feeding them IN for about a year now. One thing I noticed is that their coats do appear healthy and shinny. There was a period when I stopped for a while and almost immediately, their coats became noticeably dullUnsure... Resuming the supplements restored back the shineSmile!

Another plus point is that it does help to promote hair growth and I have seen it actually cover bare spots.

Having said all that, I would recommend it if nothing else but to have good coats and skin. It does not come cheap either. Since we have multi-dog household, it's cheaper to buy in bulk. In this case, the biggest container (6.75 lbs) cost about RM200-RM240 (depends on what promotion is going on). In general, the formula is 1 nugget per 5lbs weight. I give them 2 nuggets with each meal, total 4 nuggest a day per dog, x3 doggies = 12 nuggets a day. The 3 kg container last me about 3.5 mths.

The smallest unit (1.5 lbs) cost RM70. For my 3 furkids, this last about slightly more than a month.

Hope this helps. Rdgs Arthur

Re: [arthur] Diet of MS

hey arthur n derrick,

not to worry the in product in ss2 will expire in 2004 but when i went there last week i saw only a few left......another alternative would be the shop in pudu..heard that all their products are very cheap the in product there is 40 bucks for the small one. i think the big one would be more value for money...anyways anyone one of you feedin your pooches with cod liver oil??

kanch
