Agility Party Can't Post

Hiya people, would anyone be interested in a Dog Agility Party? Perhaps hosted on a Saturday so it doesn't clash with MKA Obedience training or dog show...

If we can get a decent group, it'd be fun to set up some jumps and obstacles and have some fun and games with our furkids Cool

Participants can sponsor either food or prizes for the games... I can bring home-made jumps... and anyone who has experience in dog agility pls give your ideas !

We can organize all the games on lead, so dogs don't run off if they are not trained to the level yet, and owners can have some exercise too then! We could also do some team games where dog and owner teams have to finish the course in order, b4 next team member starts, etc..,

Let me know what you guys think - if enough support, we can think about setting a date & venue.

Hi Mr Khoo, great you can make it! But I think I'll need your help organizing, coz i haven't done this before... also, we don't have a venue yet. Do you know of a venue we could use for this? A dog friendly field big enough to set up some jumps and obstacles?

Oh, more ideas for obstacles: I think I might be able to get a tunnel from a toy shop as well - so we have more variety of obstacles. If not, we can always make them out of cardboard boxes...

hiya, no prob... we can run all the games ON leash. I don't think i could handle juno without a leash either, not in a public place, but since most of us have not done that much agility, we don't have to build the jumps so high etc, so we can do some jumping ourselves to encourgae our dogs.

Cool you are up for it!

Anyone like to suggest a date? How about Saturday 9th Nov, or Saturday 23rd? 23rd might give us more time to plan and get more equipment ready...

A day trip will just be fine as quite a number of us who are attending obedience training will not be free on Sunday. It will be fun to let the doggie play at the beach and play some simple agility stuff.

I guess all of us can organize together. No need to have complicated stuff, just some simple obstacle, tunnels to try out our doggie. Since most of our dogs have not been trained for agility, it is definitely fun to try. As for the venue, how about a day trip to PD as suggested by Jason ?

hi Luckey,

Yes, pls. check with MKA stuff first. Alternatively, the *last* option would be the lake side of Kota Kemuning (huh? where? )Unsure. Well, I put it as last option because of the followings:

1. It could be too far off PJ/Cheras/KL area. Kota Kemuning is in Shah Alam district, about 10 KM from Subang/USJ.

2. There's a lake! ..Though the scenary is nice and cool..but I'm afraid certain dogs may dive for the water!

3. In the evening (typically weekends) 5-7 p.m, quite a no. of casual walkers there. Some of them walk with their dogs too. So, might create a stir! I'm not too sure about Sat/Sun morning though..

4. I hope this piece of land is not under MPSA as there's no sign board saying so. And, as mentioned, people walk their dogs there too.

hi,

Although the venue is not finalized, I would like to propose to meet @ on the 30/Nov or 1/Dec.

I feel this timing is just right as it's still 'Puasa' month , probably there'll be less people in the park. Also, it should give those doggies take part in the show in Melaka (17/Nov) some good rest before the gathering. 7/Dec & 8/Dec may not be ideal as some of us might be planning for their Raya holidays.

What do u say?

Re: [Khoobg] Agility Party [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi all,

I propose we start off early in the morning due to the current rainy weather condition esp in the afternoons/evenings. So let's say we start off at 0900H and keep this 1st session short for 2hrs so we can disband before it gets too warm. This way the grass would still be relatively dry, providing the traction required for all that running and jumping involved.

Activities wise, let's keep it fun and simple. May I humbly propose the following:

Jumping, weave poles, tunnel..These should not pose too big an obstacle which might take away the "fun" factor! To keep things interesting, maybe we can start off with a short 10-15min talk on the sport of agility, a demo, timed trials for individual handler/dog classified by small/medium/large breeds and finally a team event along the lines of flyball but without the ball, just plain jumping thru hurdles. This list is not final, I would love to see the Goldies/Labbies do their fetch! Smile And who knows, someone might just send their water babies swimming in the nearby lake! Take it away people!Sly

Arthur, i LURRVE your idea! Sounds irresistable already! I will bring Juno, though I wish lil' Luckey was old enough.

Can you do the short talk / explanation on the sport of agility?

Should we also sort out who will bring what equipment?

I can defintiely provide:
- 4 colored poles (look like horse jumping poles, so will look good for the photos if anyone's taking)
- 2 sets of wings
(together these can make 2 jumps)

We can see what else everyone can bring along and I will chip in more on the equipment if needed. I hear you can get tunnels suitable for dog use at Toys R Us and other toystores... I haven't gone to have a look yet, but planning to.

Who can do weave poles?

Should we also compile a list of all dogs confirmed attending and breed so can do some planning in advance on classes and team event?

Hi Luckey,

Things are heating up!Smile

I am hardly qualified to talk about the sport of agility. Let's see who can volunteer! In the meantime, I can do my part by searching out more info on this exciting sport and posting it up later.

Meanwhile, I reckon we would need at least 8 jumps. This can be set up in a simple course for the individual event and later rearranged into two columns of 4 jumps each for the team event. As for the tunnel, we need at least 1. If we can get one low table, this would be great. Weave poles can be simple or complicated. Simple approach would be to simply hammer in 4 sticks in a straight line. Sly Or we have to look for a proper holder. Me thinks we keep it simple and go for the 1st approach.

Before we proceed any further, for the record, let's make it real clear to all that are reading this thread that this event is STRICTLY for the fun of it. No formal agility training or instruction is involved. This is just a realisation of a good idea to have some fun with our furkids. Plain and simple. Please keep this in mind folks (especially for MKA members)

Hi Khoo,

Sure, I will provide the necessary info. later. (after 24/Nov) as I need to travel overseas next week and may not access the Forum that frequently. As a matter of fact, I have the perfect view of the proposed venue , but it's a Macromedia Flash. Khoo, I will need ur help in this to upload it. If technically can not be done, shall I review the URL and instructions to get to it??

Just came back from the lake side (10 a.m) and there's nobody there. Yes, there's a big piece of flat land, 100 ft. from the lake side which can accommodate ...about 100 dogs! There's a smaller piece nearer to the lake, a bit sloppy towards the lake. And it will be a challenge to do agility there! There's 2 rows of talk palm trees which are quite shaddy, and a little 'hut' like resting area. (where we put our food/drink)

Also, I would like to suggest the Winners of the forthcoming MKA show in Melaka to contribute something.. (food, drink etc..) Wink .. so, Khoo, Arthur, Luckey, Lim, Mackay ..pls take note!! Sly

(Remember our Tmn Rimba gathering? It's due to the Selayang/S'gor MKA show that brought us together!)

Sounds good? Looking forward to this!

Yes things are coming together, I took Juno over some jumps today and she is really starting to enjoy it! Wink

So: equipment-wise: Who wants to volunteer to bring what?

I will try check out the TUNNEL sometime over the weekend, but anyone else who wants to can do so also.

The easiest for me is to bring more POLES if we need more jumps, but i don't have very tall wings, (coz my dogs only small!) so those bringing big dogs may want to bring some taller wings if they want to jump a bit higher.

Arthur, you want to do the weave poles?

Hi Luckey,

I think at best, I can supply a few more PVC poles. Not sure how to do those 'stumps' , the stumps can be just wooden sticks perhaps? We need to hammer them into the ground?

hi Boon,

refers: "More do u let Rex jump into the lake ans swim....i think labbies is good in that right ? " .. Do u mean "Moo, do u let Rex jump into the lake ans swim....i think labbies is good in that right ? " .. If so, yes. twice only. One by accident, as the frisbee got blown to the lake (about 8 feet away from the shore) . But must admit that I was scared to death., Rex was only 4 months + then. Well, retrievers r good swimmers..

I think should Bonney tag along, better to 'tumpang' @ ur friend's house.

Dear cdmoo,

The place which u said i think is called kota kemuning it's a residential area with a lake and it's built by the developer named gamuda land bhd. (same as the one in klang named bandar botanic) i get to know there is a guard house at the entrence, so i thought only for those staying inside that area to enter.

i think should be no problem for all doggies to meet there but if they all went into the lake than it should be a big probelm.Tongue

as for me on Nov. 30th it's saturday and i'm working! 8:30 til 1pm. wah! u all got no work ah so good u all work five days week only ah!! another problem is my Jamie dunno anything on agility! she only knows to run here and there like a clown.Unsure

Hi Serene,

Probably u have not gone thru' all the treads... I stay in Kota Kemuning (KK), about 10 - 12 min. walk from the lake. Serene, why not u take leave on 30/Nov to join us ??

OK, people, here're the instructions to get to view the area that we r meeting on 30/Nov 9 a.m

(The venue)
  1. www.kotakemuning.net
  2. U might be prompted to download the Flash plug-in and so forth..
  3. Click 'Enter site', u will see a new window
  4. Near the top right corner, u will see the picture of the KK township, click the "Click to view >>" to take a virtual tour. A new window will pop up.
  5. The lake (green colour) is U-shaped. U will notice there're many green-dots. Position your mouse to the green-dot will show you the location.
  6. Now, position ur mouse to the green dot(s) there r at the TIP OF THE LAKE, u will see a short text "Lakeside View". In fact, there r TWO green dots having "LakeSide View".
  7. Click on these green dots to see the respective views. U will see a hut-like benches and 2 rows of palm tree. This is the area for our meet.

(How to go to Kota Kemuning)
  1. www.kotakemuning.net
  2. U might be prompted to download the Flash plug-in and so forth..
  3. Click 'Enter site', u will see a new window
  4. At the top , u will see "Location", click on it, a new window will pop up.
  5. Then click 'Click to View' to view the location map

(How to go to Kota Kemuning - the lake)
  1. Once u enter the KK main entrance, u will see the fort-like structure and a guard house.
  2. (dont worry about the guard house, no one will stop u)
  3. Drive further up, u will see the big round-about, make a right turn (3'clock)
  4. Drive up another 100meters, u will see a single-storey building on ur left, and on your right, u will see a big "McDonald Drive-in" signboard.
  5. My suggestion is to meet at the building... BUT PLEASE DO NOT GET DOWN WITH YOUR DOGS THERE. This building is the 'maintenance office' , they r people working on Saturdays.

Hi Arthur, yup, Bangkok is dog friendly and lots of dog lovers. They even have their own doggie program. Of coz I could not understand a thing they were saying but just admire the dogs. So, dog is a much sought after pet over there. Even pasar malam vendors bring their dogs to the stalls. Admire their dogs instead of their wares..hehe. Anyhow, I still prefer home. Nothing beats that. Shall see you again at the gathering on 30th. Good luck & all the best for the show. That goes the same to everyone who's participating in Melaka show.

hi there,

Some of us might be confused as exactly "which spot" we r going to meet @ Kota Kemuning. Pls. refer to the following directions to get to the "right spot" Smile. I have to assume that you all know how to get to the main entrance of the Kota Kemuning township, if not, please refer to www.kotakemuning.net for more info.
  1. Once enter into the KK township, you will see a big roundabout, make a right turn (3 o'clock)
  2. Drive straight for about 1.3KM (along the way, you will see the lake on the left and mostly-vacant-shop-houses on your right)
  3. You will end up at a Y-junction
  4. Turn left at the Y-junction, and drive up further
  5. You will end up at another Y-junction
  6. Turn left, park your car.
  7. The venue is about 50meters from the parking area.

Hi all:

According to CD Moo, there's a 'hut' around the lake area, so we can put the food there. He suggested someone could bring some mats for us to sit on the grass or maybe someone can bring some plastic chairs or something. He also added that the area does not have that many trees so it may be quite hot so you guys may want to bring umbrellas.

CD Moo may have something else to add on this?

hi CY,

Refers: "He also added that the area does not have that many trees so it may be quite hot so you guys may want to bring umbrellas"

It's actually two rows of palm trees... didn't count how many exactly.. probably 20 Smile

I'm more concerned on the stuff for our doggies.. such as the poles, etc.. Luckey, what else do u need ? I will buy some poles but how long & many ? Also, we probably need to cut the poles into 3-ft long and hammer them onto the ground to act like 'stump'. This row of stump is for the dogs to walk in the zig-zag direction. Can someone bring the cutter to cut the PVS poles/pipes?

HI cdmoo

I just bought two hoops today from toys R Us,,, one for each team... tried looking for a tunnel but they don't sell the nice ones i see on the web (but that's from the US and they don't ship outside of the US)

Was thinking we could make the tunnels out of the hoops, or we could use the hoops like TIRE JUMPS...

We could also turn them into COLLAPSIBLE TUNNELS by sewing fabric, but then we still need to get something to make the hoops stand.

How about everyone coming try to bring at least one jump set (i.e. 2 poles, 2 wings which can be chairs, stools, boxes, anything to support the poles to make a jump). It shouldnt cost too much... the pvc poles are usually sold the right length for a dog jump (broomstick length or a bit longer) and they cost under 10 bucks each pole.

Would be great if you could do the weave poles! Smile

hehehe ... can't even remember what limbo music sounds like Laugh

but as for the chairs, should be ok, coz for the smaller dogs, we can always make the jump into a crossbar, so the center of the jump will be as low as we want.

also, if we have a variety of heights, then we can have team events, maybe the big dogs can partner the small dogs and they are sposed to jump concurrently or something. we'll work it out when we get there and see what equipment we have Smile

Yeah you have to take the Kesas highway in order to get there. Head towards Shah ALam and Kota Kemuning is on your left....I also not sure of the way, I may be picking up Boon in Puchong or he follows my car but we're not sure yet, he hasn't confirmed his itinerary yet, since he's coming down from Penang...We'll probably have to call CD Moo if we can't find the way on that day too! For me, as a female, I mostly rely on sighboards and asking people for directions hehe....if really get lost, ask around ! Laugh

All our best wishes for Kiddie's lump. Hope it's not a major thing (like a hernia!) and nothing some antibiotics(if it's just an infection) and lots of tender loving care cannot cure! Keep us informed!

Thanks for all the caring words for kiddiBlush

The lump is abt a ping pong size ball...the vet used a needle to suck some of the liquid for sample test. They checked under the microskop and it was a 'pus'

The next moment, it was filled with kiddi's crying and crying when they suck out the 'pus'

Hi Jennifer,

I've managed to put together a table made up of 2 wooden pallets. Smile

It is about 10" high only so it'll be easy for the furkids to jump up and hopefully sit/stay for 5 secs before jumping off to continue on with the rest of the obstacles.

I'll be bringing either Pepper or Lee Ron.

Great about the table!

I haven't decided who to bring... Juno or Luckey.

Juno's the one that's getting really expert at jumping, but she's also gotten really wild about it - she's soooo mega excited everytime we have a jump session.

Luckey needs the socialization with people and other dogs if she's gonna do showing, but my hubby says if Brinkley can't go (too young) then Luckey can't go!

hmm... what u think?

Boy, did I have fun! I was so thrilled to see so many doggies in one place at any one time! Hehe, feel so jakun. Blush Sorry about my mysterious entrance and exit, felt a little shy to be around so many people.. had the pleasure of (sorta) meeting Jennifer, Cheryl, Pat, Melanie, Tisha, Chris. Had the pleasure of meeting most furkids and having them slobber over me. Laugh Mistook Spring for Luckey and Cheryl for Jennifer! Embarrassing when I finally figured it out. I thought Rex chasing Biscuit around was hilarious!

What a perfect morning. Can't wait for the next gathering! Cool

Hi Jennifer,

Thks for posting up Lee Ron boy's pictures. I'm glad he behaved himself well. He did tried to pollinate some of the plants there. His coat was full of pollen collected when he went sniffing out the bushes!

Juno looks lovely with her shiny coat. Hard to believe she's a mommy!

Huh? You were there at the gathering? When did you phase in and out? Smile

Anyway, glad you could join us and meet the furkids and their owners. Did Lee Ron came up to say Hi to you? He's the mini-schnauzer with the blue bandana with his name lovingly stitched on by his mama..

Yup, finally saw the agility event, the chasing around event and not to mention the swimming event. Next time, we should really make sure that we owner have an eating event. At least we have a peace in mind that there will be at least 2 doggy "Baywatch" lifesaver in Rex and Biscuit with a potential one in Nous Wink.. Comments...???

hi Jason,

Sounds good! Does it mean mean that we need to off-leash them? Would it create any havoc in the public area? U have seen Rex & Biscuit in action.. they could run as far ( & as fast) as they want..

Secondly, we have to indentify a spot in PD where it's a bit remote (ie. away from the roads, crowd etc...)

Hi cdmoo. Yup, very true indeed judging from the way Rex and Biscuit enjoyed themselves. These 2 were entirely in a world of their own. I supposed we need to asked GinL how it was handled when she had her outing at the beach with other dogs. Hopefully someone from puppy.com can help us identify a secluded spot. There's no fun if the dogs were to be on-leash. Best time would be b4 Raya for sure but Raya is just round the corner Frown Lets hear more comment from the others.

When we had our gathering at the beach in Penang not all dogs were off leashed....only those whom the owners think they can recall their dogs back were given the trust....as for mine once he has his heart set on running after something there's no stopping him but one thing that made me let him off leash was coz he usually chases the other dogs so when we want them to come back my friend wud call her dog and mine will follow heheh......guess if there are a lot of other ppl around at the beach having them off leash is not a good idea unless u know your dog will come to you when called....but if the dogs are on leash and u want them to jump in for a swim u''ll hv to go in with them Wink

Dec 21 is better and I will also be away back to Penang on Dec 28. By the way, there will be an obedience trial on Dec 29, 2002 in Ipoh.

There will also be a MKA ABC Show in Penang this weekend on DEC 8, 2002 and hence there will be no training session at Padang Merbok on this Sunday.

I sorta fluttered in around 10 and fluttered out about 11.30am.

I saw you teaching Cheryl and Jennifer how to stack their doggies with Lee Ron! He was very sweet, said hi to me briefly, slobbered over my hand then ran off with your other pup, Lee Sha? I thought the bandana was very cute! He's a beautiful dog. I have a good mind to look up the breed now. Sly

CDMoo! Yer furkid was Rex, wasn't it? Cheeky Rex. LOL! Shy la wanna meet the other gentlemen.. thought I'd meet the furry gentlemen only. Blush I know who you are though (if Rex is yer imp), you kept reprimanding him, and he kept ignoring you! Haha. So cheeky.

Sorry la, Jason. I was so mysterious.. Blush I met your furkid though, and I know who you are. Just a little shy to introduce myself, that's all. Your cocker spaniel is as magnificent as its picture! Must've been feeling hot though, all black coat like that. And yer furkid took a liking to Cheryl's Spring! Hehe.

I won't be around for Christmas and I think PD is out of the question.. Hafto wait til next year for the next gathering?! Die lor like this.. need.. to.. see.. furkids.. Pirate*die*

Hi there!

Guess by now you know that we won't bite!Wink Do linger round longer during our next meeting wokay? Normally, we recongise the doggies first then followed by the question: Err..are you (insert doggie name here) owner? What's your name? Sometimes from this simple introduction, lasting friendships are made.Smile

Thks for the kind words on my Lee Ron boy. Glad he made a good impression on you. He was chasing another cute white doggie belonging to Alicia. (Lee Sha was not there that day) And the bandana was made by his mama for his 1st birthday in November. If you have any queries on Miniature Schnauzers, let me know. I'll try to help out. Smile

If you're gonna to miss the next outing, there's always the New Year 2003 and Chinese New Year gatherings!

I'll be around til the 18th. My aunt's holding her Christmas party on the 18th at Flagz and demands I serve her hand and foot so I'll be there but it'll be a bad night for yer furkiddies to come-- too much commotion and I won't have time to pamper yer babies!

We could have several small gatherings at Flagz, I think that'll be better. 20 odd pups and their owners would be overwhelming at any one time. Tongue So let me know when you're coming with yer furkids and I'll be sure to work that day. Cool

Furkids! Yay. *makes mental note to buy Christmas treats*

Fluttered in and out that fast. No wonder... I thought I saw a beautiful butterfly. Just kidding. Next time don't be a stranger. Like Arthur said, now you know that we owners do not bite. Thanks for your kind comments about my dog. At least he met you Wink. Yup, he sure took a liking to Spring, following her around and harrassing her ..hehe. See you next time round, ok. Cheers

HI Freakism,

Chris and I dropped by FLagz on Saturday night ... thought we could bring Brinkley, but then it looked a bit too much like a bar - but maybe the time we went... is lunch a better time to bring furkids?

anyway, have a good break till next weekend and see you at the nxt gathering!!
