Re: [chika] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA [In reply to] Can't Post

visited SPCA again this morning with my darling daugther, Sam. There is something on this 30th Sun for all those dogs which were put to sleep due to sickness and .... All it takes is to buy a candle for 1 ringgit and they will light these candles on the 30th.

There were 2 furry in the cages with a sign that says...Last Chance Dog. No need to explain....no home and no chance to carry on life. It's just soooo sad...their eyes tells it all as though they knew. Oh..and then there is this little Pug ...very healthy looking but down with kidney problem. That's why she is there! And then there is Spotty, a Terrier X, house trained, adorable ...black with white patches. And there's button and oh....so many...

The good thing is I might be successful in getting a lab adopted by my friend. It was just coincidence that he called while i was there. Anyone out there wants to bring another doggy home???? I will if I could....was strictly warned by DH NOT to bring home...3 is enough Smile

Hi :

It was the SPCA in Ampang. The two furries are not dobberman. Just mixed breed, one black and the other black/white. If I remembered correctly, one is a mix spitz.

Oh...my friend took the Bush the Lab. Already paid RM200 deposit. I am so happy Laugh. Since my friend is a first time owner, I am helping him to buy the leash, dog bowls etc. SmileSmile

Re: [vicfion] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi fion,

Please, I'm not upset at all.... Everybody is entitled to what he/she has to say and I do agree that the adoption fees for some of the doggies are almost as high as the prices of pet shop doggies. We paid RM800 for our Basset Hound and were told that these high price doggies are the ones that actually produce some solid revenue for SPCA's operations. We wish we could adopt more doggies and hope that paying these high adoptions fees will be the alternative way of helping SPCA. Then again, I must admit that we are quite fortunate to be able to afford the doggie.
The way I see it is that, because only a small portion of the doggies are adopted while all the doggies have to be looked after equally, SPCA has no choice but to put some high adoption fees for doggies with high potential for adoption (I know it's an awful way of describing them) in order to sustain the overall cost. I also think that the current situation is creating a vicious cycle of "adoption fees are so high - people don't want to adopt - not many dogs are adopted - adoption fees remain high to sustain the cost". Hopefully, when more and more people begin to adopt dogs from these shelters, they may not have to rely solely on these high price dogs and eventually reduce the adoption fees?

By the way, all the doggies at SPCA are neutered before they are ready for adoption and all the initial necessary vaccinations are given free of charge (excluding annual boosters - that's the owners' responsibility.)

I'm not volunteering at SPCA or anything, I just go there from time to time and donate some stuff, but it's just so disheartening to see all these doggies there and I strongly believe that these guys deserve everything that any other house doggies deserve, or if not more. I just hope that my scribbles here would in any way help increase awareness to these guys there waiting for loving home and unconditional love.

Hi Gin,

August 30th is apparently the International Homeless Animal Day to remember the shelter dogs and cats that are put to sleep due to overpopulation and to create awareness of these creatures longing for loving homes as well as the importance of neutering/spaying.
Anybody can join the interntional campaign by buying a vigil candle for RM1 at SPCA in Ampang and there is a candlenight vigil in KL on the same day.
I will put more details on the "Event Calendar".

Re: [chika] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi there... You are right. They need as much money as they can for the animals in their shelter. By the way, if you are interested, do check out my website at www.geocities.com/amomentwithfion. There you can see the condition of the shelter I worked before. Or if you are interested to see the cards I had donated to the shelter do refer at vicfion.wakaf.net under Doggie With A Hat and VicFion Postcards.
I can see people don't adopt because of the price so I do hope they will reduce a little to a more reasonable price.
You know what. I never know how to go to SPCA. I only sent those donation through mail. Maybe in the future when we able to meet, Maybe we can donate some food and stuff together?
Take care.... Fion

Hi fion,

Saw the cards on your web..are the Christmas cards available at SPCA? Then we'll buy a whole bunch for this year's Christmas.

We live in northern end of KL and SPCA is about 15 minutes by cab (I can't drive!) Let me know the next time you go to SPCA and why don't we head up there together?

I don't think SPCA still have them... I did not send many.... I only got a certain amount left over from the shops I displayed them... I find that it is a waste of time since email and e-cards are so advance... so I asked my friends can I donate all of them to SPCA since all the cards are dogs together wth mine.... used to work in a shelter so hoping I can lend a hand.... I will try to get more from my friends.... no promises.... we are not that close now... will sms her now but don't think I will get any reply... will update you....
I often have my kids at my mom's on Wednesday or Thursday where I am very free.. but I bet you have to work so I guess weekends will suit you... I don't know how we are going to meet up since you don't drive.... But let's fit something up?
You know what... actually, I wanted to print my cards but financially I can't.... the postcards I had? I had made them into normal cards too... just can't find the money to print... if you guys would like to help SPCA, maybe we can print them and sell them during their jumble sale... but just a thought....
Mind emailing me a photo of yours? I guess yu already see how I look like from my website.... vicfion@yahoo.com.. Fion

Hi there,

I've got hundreds of dog photos, but no so many (decent-looking) ones of mine... anyway, just to let you know that I'm free on weekdays because I work at home. So whenever you're free and feel like making a visit to SPCA, just drop me a line here. If you drive, you can pick me up somewhere and if not, we can still meet up at a LRT station or somewhere and take it from there on a cab. (Btw, where do you live? We're in Setapak, KL)

Cool.... mind me asking what kind of job you are doing at home? Maybe we can work together too...
Anyway, I am in Subang Jaya and everyday except Tuesday and weekends I will be at my mom's in Damansara Heigths.... I do drive but I prefer to get on a LRT to meet up with you... Is there a LRT go straight to where you at? I have phobia driving long distance... sorry.... got accidents and bad experiences before :( and worst... I am never good with roads.... Normally I will have my kids at my mom's on Wednesdays and Thursday so those will be the days I am free... Do contact me at my hp then... 012-6749950... keep in touch then... Fiona

So happy to know that you are adopting the pug. I saw her too last Sunday, she's a beautiful dog. Dr. Puspa offered her to me (adoption lah) the minute I was there but I couldnt since I just took in a pup with hind legs problem 2 weeks ago Wink Already got 3 furries and their fur are flying all over my houseSmile

Are you a regular visitor/volunteer there?? I am there with my daughter whenever I have the time to spare, usually before noon. That's why most of the staff knows me there!
Will most likely be there this Sun too!

Hi Gins,

I am still debating with myself whether i should adopt the pug. coz if i did, i'm afraid i would have no time to take care of her. i do not want to leave her alone at home when i'm at work! but i fell in love with the pug, our story started more than 3 months ago when she first came to SPCA! whichever the case, i would make sure that she is all well, without her kidney problem, and find a good home!

Yes, i am a volunteer at SPCA. i go there every sunday, usually around 1pm and stay till 7pm! Hope to see u there this Sunday. i'll try to go there earlier!

Re: [ai_ney] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

Unfortunately, it wasn't me who you met last Sunday as I was in Penang. I usually visit SPCA during weekdays.
Talking about Penang, we ended up with another doggie last weekend. We bumpted into a poor little thing that was wandering around with a limp in front of my mom-in-law's house. It was raining and he looked like he had nowhere to go, so we took him in. A neighbor told us that the dog was hit by a car and had been roaming for days. Since nobody knew where the dog came from, we decided to take him with us back to KL. We named him "Buddy".
Now our doggie count is back to 6 now. He is still very nervous and a little cautious with our other dogs, but we hope that he will soon realize that he now has 5 friends to play with....

Anyways, hope to see you (for real) soon.

Re: [ai_ney] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA [In reply to] Can't Post

I think buddy is settling in slowly. We took him to our vet and took X-rays & blood test. Thank goodness he has no fractured bones or any serious damage despite having been hit by a car. The only thing is that he is very very fat and was immediately put on a weight-reduction diet. He's about 6 years old, which makes him the oldest member of our canine family. It is no doubt that he was a house dog at least for a while and we're now wondering whether he is used to commands in English since he's a little non-responsive to our voices, but then again we can't speak Chinese SlySly

Since you're a volunteer at SPCA, you know the so-called "J's dogs"? Actually, we were asked to babysit one of the dogs "Julie" last January and she was with us until June. She's now with our friend, who is another dogmania, and we were feeling that we might have a room for Julie's replacement when we met Buddy. (And Julie and Buddy look very similar - only that Buddy is like 3 times bigger than Julie.)Truly, things happen for a reason alright.

uh... you mean dogs only respond to their previous owners' lingo. oh boy...my colleague who is collecting Bush the lab today from SPCA just asked me over lunch what's the background of Bush. I have absolutely no idea and he said that he will have to try all lingo Sly . Another colleague suggested offering chapati or chicken rice and see which food Bush favours most SmileSmile Then he's know who the previous owner was!!

Hi Fiona

Sorry for the long delay.
I wanted to go to SPCA yesterday, but missed the chance. I have to go there this week anyway to pick up tickets and candles for the International Homeless Animal Day candlelight vigil on August 30.
Since you said you are relatively free on Wednesdays and Thursdays, how about this Wed?
My nearest LRT station is Wangsa Maju on Putra line, but why don't we meet, say, Ampang Park station because it may be easier and faster (if it's daytime) to get to SPCA?
Looking forward to your reply.

Hi

Too bad I couldn't make it to SPCA yesterday. Was hoping to meet you there, but got pretty busy at home and by the time I settled down, it was 4pm.

I'm just wondering whether I can stay there after 4pm as long as I don't bother any staff there...?
A lot of times my hubby wants to come along, but by the time he's free, it's almost 4pm.

btw, will you be at the candlelight vigil thing on Aug 30? Hope to see you there.

I was in SPCA at about 3pm yesterday. Were you there at around that time? Met a group of girls there cleaning up the cages and walking the dogs. I told this young lady that my daughter, Sam and two other volunteers had already walked them earlier.

If that was you, then a big hello to you. You are doing a great job! I fell in love with the black cocker spaniel in the first cage and guess what, I managed to convince my sis to adopt him. They 'flew' up from Klang immediately and this is her second dog. SmileAnd of course, this god ma gets to vist him all the time WinkWink

Hi Chika!

There's always the next Sunday! i would make sure i go to SPCA every sunday, coz if i do not go for a week, i would miss the doggies there so so much! my friends tease me that SPCA is like my 'church', every sunday must go! Tongue

Do u know Reve in SPCA? she's the only european lady there! she is a full time volunteer. after 4pm, there would be no staff there except the evening caretaker who prepares the food and also the volunteers. so yes, i think u could stay back after 4pm and enjoy being surrounded by more than 20 doggies! but make sure u r there at least by 3.30pm and tell Reve that you would like to stay back and help out! it would be fun! Laugh

yup i would be at rahsia bistro this saturday! although i'm still wondering how to get there coz i dun drive! anyway, we could meet there! Smile
