hi,

woah, only placed in SPCA for one hour and he's outta there? he must be stand-out angel! and you're lucky that faith has brought both of u together (if you would've reached SPCA later, i suppose that dog is taken too)...........

from the sound of it, i'm sure little max is up for a good life in future :) by the way, how old is he? JRTs are splendidly active dogs, i'm sure he'll keep u busy the rest of the days. hehe.

ps : it's kinda odd a little JRT mix is named Max... as i know a big giagantic Rottie that's named Max too :))

Re: [lynnzter] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi lynnzter,

Thanks for sharing your wonderful story. Every time I go to SPCA or PAWS, it's so hard to fight the temptation to take them all back home and make one giant canine family. (Well, my hubby has less control and every time we go there together, we come back with a doggie.)

Our first adopted dog, Lacy, was pregnant when somebody brought her to SPCA. Unfortunately, the babies never made it to this world alive and Lacy almost lost her life as she suffered TB right after the miscarriage. She made it through thanks to the care by one of the SPCA staff and now she's been with us for over a year as the eldest sister in our canine family.

All these doggies at the shelter have a story to tell and a lot of them are very sad. Still they can give us so much joy, laughter and unconditional love. Maybe because she was a streetdog, Lacy did not roll over and show her tummy for the longest time. When she finally did so and let me rub her tummy, I was so overjoyed to have gained her trust. Yes we changed her life, but she has brought so much more to our life. I'm pretty sure you and your little Max will have a whole lot more fun together than you can imagine. Congratulations and best of luck to both of you.

Re: [hunter] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey Hunter,

Yeah ... he's really an angel.Angelic He caught my eyes instantly as I was walking up the aisle towards the "NEW ARRIVALS". He was still pretty shaken up at that point of time. I think he must be really scared and confused. The poor mutt.

But this little angel is a little devil in disguise. He's really bossy! Tongue He's really choosy about his food. He only wants tasty and aromatic food. He won't eat plain doggy biscuits. I have to mix with canned food / milk.

The people at SPCA told us he's two and a half months old ... But I think he's older ... as he's pretty big already ... but still a puppy ... cos' he's still teething. Probably around 6 months old.

P/S : I wanted to name him "Benjy" ... but I have a friend whose name's "Benjamin" ... he's gonna kill me if I named my doggy "Benjy". Hehehe ... Second option was "Wishbone" ... but JRTs are no wishbones Smile. So, "Max" it is. It's short and macho. Hehehe ...Laugh

Re: [hunter] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey Hunter,

He's definitely a spoilt little mutt. Crazy

He's on strike ... he refuses to eat anything I give to him ... I've tried 4 different brands of puppy food pellets; 2 types of canned food; puppy formulated milk; beggin' strips; doggy treats; doggy barbeque gravy ... I'm running out of ideas.

It seems he was fed with leftover scraps from his previous owner ... that includes rice and CHICKEN BONES [I know because he puked all over in my car when I brought him back from SPCA last weekend. He's car sick. Poor mutt.] Yeah, irresponsible people ... Frown Sad isn't it?

I brought him to the vet and they gave him deworm pills ... and I hope he'll start eating soon. He's so skinny now. I can practically see his hip bones. Pirate

Re: [lynnzter] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA [In reply to] Can't Post

hi,

well, i have to admit, once you've given the dog food other from dog food, it's really hard to get 'em eat back their dog food again (maybe it tastes really nasty)

maybe u can try to mix the dog biscuits with yoghurt (natural flavour)? my dog is really fussy too. the deal is : no yoghurt, no mum-mum :|

little max just need more time to adapt the living style.. not his fault he's fussy... he's brought up that way - a spoilt boy. hahaha.

Max : bon apetite!

SmileCongrats to the new mom!

hmm...try feeding him what he was originally fed-minus the bones of course and mix it with kibble.

If he still doesn't wanna eat try feeding him pure rice and chicken then slowly add the kibble.

Eventhough the kibble may by good for the dog, human food still tastes much much much better than kibble/canned food.

Hope this helps.Smile

Hey Hunter,

Thanks for the suggestion on the yoghurt. I'm gonna give that a try tonight.

Last night, I tried mixing an egg into his doggy food ... he finished everything. But when I tried it again this morning, he only took a bite. And that's it. He refuses to eat anymore. *sigh*

Yeah ... the previous owner must have fed him with all sorts of food. That's why it's kinda hard to get him back to eating doggy food ... Unsure

Re: [RealityDreamer] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks, RealityDreamer. Blush

The thing is ... I try not to give him rice ... I heard it's bad for their teeth, because rice tends to leave residue on the teeth ... I do brush his teeth though. But I think it's a bit uncomfortable for him as he's still teething. Oh, he loves chicken ... I've given that to him a coupla times and he simply ate every single last piece of it.

Yeah, kibble seems to be the appropriate food for dog ... it keeps the digestive and coat healty. But, little Max just refused to have any doggy food! Pirate

I'm still slowly trying to coax him back to eating doggy food ... Jack Russells can be really stubborn. I read in an article on the web ... it says there they will go without food for a week! I'm worried poor Max will do the same and he'll end up just skin and bones Unimpressed

hmm...it's going to be real though...the poor thing is so small,he's going to get in trouble if he refuses to eat...Unsure

hmm..how bout crushing the kibble into smaller pieces and mixing it with chicken? or maybe softening the kibble and then mix with chicken??

Good luck!

I've tried mashing up the kibbles with canned food and gravy ... but still to no avail. Frown

I've even soaked the kibbles in milk (like how we eat our cereals) ... it still didn't work. Unsure

So, I'm gonna try using yoghurt tonight ... like what Hunter suggested. Hopefully this works. *keeping my fingers crossed*

Hi Chika,

I got peeka from a pet shop in Endah Perade, Sri Petaling. So, can't be related,...... but she also about 1 and a half year old too now....and have the energy of 3 children combined together.....She just never seem to be tired at all except when we went for a stroll in our neighbourhood. Even that only deminish her of 1/3 of its energy. She also bark when she hear people walking pass our house and when we want to go out.

But she quite bright too. We usually let her come into the house, but when we want to go out and trying to trick her to go out....a trick never work more then 3 times!!!!!! so, my sis and I have to think up new trick quite often and mind u... she got long memory so old trick can't be reuse....sigh!!!Crazy

I would love to go to the gathering but I could never seem to quite catch the time....it often overdue by the time i know......do tell me if there anymore coming up and I will try to go this time.

Re: [lynnzter] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA [In reply to] Can't Post

Lynn,

Did u leave the food for him to eat with all the time he wants?

Try this, no free feeding for him, always feed him at a particular time, leave the food for him to finish in say 10 mins, after that time's up, regardless of if he has finish eating or not, take the food away, repeat it at the next meal time, he will get the message.

I think he is trying to train u to give him the best deal:) my dog tried this with me, the first time i took his food away, he dun really bother, thinking i'll give him something later, the 2nd time he was a bit hesitant, the 3rd time when he see me feeding him, he quickly finish everything and leave only a clean bowl:)

So u wanna train him or be trained by him?

Just my 2 cents worth...
Maybe we should better discuss this under behaviour..

hi xyne,

beautiful golden you've got...
We also have a golden and our Sam will be 2 years old on 17th of this month.
His current hobby is wrestling with Willy, a Basset Hound and the second dog from SPCA. Sammy is 32kg and Willy is 26kg (he gained 9kg since we got him 7 months ago!), so talk about heavyweight sumo wrestling.

We've got 5 dogs (and 11 rabbits and nearly one thousand fish) ... the more the merrier. So go for it for the 4th canine kid!

Re: [gal] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

SPCA Selangor is located in Ampang Jaya and is near the Ampang Point mall. If you're coming along Jalan Ampang from KL, you'll come to a big flyover just before Ampang Point. Don't take the flyover and instead go left. Turn right at the first traffic light (you'll see Ampang Puteri Hospital on your right) and there should be KL International School on your left. Keep straight for a while and you'll see a small string of shops (including 7-Eleven) on your left. SPCA is next to the shoplot. The name of the street is Jalan Kerja Air Lama and the tel no. for SPCA is 4256-5312/4253-5179.

Good luck!

Re: [Bee-Age] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey Bee-Age,

Thanks for your suggestions. However ... been there and done that. And it's still not working! Frown

So ... I'm sorting to the last resort, which is rice and pure meat ... with some carrots and peas. I even mixed dog pellets (really tiny ones from Eukanuba) and he can still pick them out one by one! Hence, only rice and pure meat. Mad

Yeah, I read about doggies 'training' their owners. That's why I did challenged my JRT for a week ... but I can't bear to see him becoming thinner day by day ... and I finally gave in. But I still stick to the meal-time routine (which means no rice during non-meal time) and clear off his bowl straight-away when he walks away and refuse to eat the food during meal time. Unfortunately, he's still really stubborn.

That's JRT for you. Definitely not a dog for first-time dog owners. He's the toughest doggy I've ever handled.

Hi chika :

I too adopted my first dog from SPCA 2 years ago. Whisky is a terrier mix and is really such an angel.Smile Since then, I have added another 2 more...Jojo is a Shih Tsu with an eye problem (adopted from a friend of a friend who dont have time for a pet until she's almost blind) and the latest (since yesterday) is 2 months old Bear. She has weak hind legs and moves around like a mermaid? Keeping my fingers crossed that her legs will improve with plenty of exercise, calcium tabs and lots of TLT.Cool

I am a regular visitor at SPCA and so far, have helped Daisy (a dalmation), Barney (pug) and Duke (shih tsu X) find a good home. Hope to recommend more friends there. Each time, I'm there I just wish that I could bring one home.

Hi Gins,

I salute you for what you've been doing to help these doggies out. Please keep up the good work and if there's anything we can help, let us know.

Everytime I go to SPCA, I also wish that I could take them all back home. (and my husband actually has done so in our 2 visits there together... wonder when out next visit will be...Wink)
In fact, we had been looking after one of the doggies who are known at SPCA as "J's dogs."
We had her for 6 months until last month and now she's with our friend, accompanying her own doggie.
Now that we're one doggie less and the fact that we did manage 6 dogs... maybe there is a room for one more again....

Hi there.... wow, you are very kind hearted person willing to adopt those beautiful animals who needed home... I did that too when they are about to be put to sleep and from there I will find home for them after all neccessary injections were given... Those were the good times in the US... Here I am just too busy to do anything now:(.. miss those time.... you can view photos I took in the shelter at www.geocities.com/amomentwithfion.... But I am upset to hear that adoption fees are RM150 (mix-breed) and RM800 (pure-bred).. I kow you will hate me saying this but won't be better off if that someone just go to a pet shop and pay that amout of money for a purebreed and best of all for a puppy with a cert? I know cert don't mean a thing, as long as that dog is loyal and so on.... I mean what is adoption, right? This will make people won't want to adopt from SPCA. From the shelter in US I find that one thing good is they will charge you but is just to make sure you will neauter the dog... when you do it, from there the money will be returned to you as the medical fee. I have friend told me to adopt dogs from PAWS, they are much poorer and stuff. Sorry, to say all these but this is just what I feel... So sorry... Sorry.. don't mean to... just need to speak up.... don't be mad ok? Fion
