A dog lover checking in... Can't Post

Hi guys!

Checking in for the 1st time in this forum. I have not had a dog for like almost 12 years. Owned 2 mixed breed previously when I was a child. Have to admit that not much care was put into them as I only played & bathed them. Everything else was done by my parents. Blush

Now I am a proud owner of 2 new pups! They are 2 mongrels that I saw on my way home from work - roaming around the bush area of an intersection. Decided to rescue them before the get knock down by cars.

Then I called PAWS to inform them that I have rescued 2 pups and if they can send someone to pick them up from my neighbour's house since I'm working. To my amazement, they questioned me back on why I can't be bothered to send them in myself. With that kind of reply, I knew the pups would be better off with me.

Thus I have 2 new babies with me. What really scares me is I'm worried if I can take proper care of them as my work hours are really horrible. But I just love having them around me when I get home. Pretty obedient but need to be toilet trained as soon as I can. Otherwise I'll end up having 2 mobile poo machines!Shocked

hi mumbles! Smile

great job in rescuing the puppies and keeping them! yea better to toilet train them as soon as possible, but needs patience when doing this... set a routine and the pups will get familiar with it soon... how are your working hours like?

Re: [ai_ney] A dog lover checking in... [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi ai_ney,

My working hours are normally from 9am - 10pm. Hence it is gonna be hard for me to set a routine for them. 10pm is the average time I get home. Sometimes it's earlier or even later than that.

Currently I'm keeping them in a cage while I'm out. I know it is not good for them (based on the threads that I've read) but I have no choice.

Any suggestions on how I can toilet train them? Or should I let them roam freely at my garden area?

Thanks in advance!

wah, wat line are u working in? just curious... Tongue

well i dun hv tat much experience with puppies, but recently there is a 4 mth old puppy in my house and she's toilet trained! Cool every morning the first thing i do when i wake up is carry the puppy to the place i wan her to pee, she will pee lo coz whole nite dy mar... then feed her, after abt 5 to 10 mins, i take her to the same place to poo, so she will poo lo... then i go work n she'll be in the cage, like u said, no choice (most important is to let her run abt the house when i'm home)... come back 10 hrs later, first thing again is take her to the designated place to pee, again she will pee, rite after dinner let her poo again... she got used to the whole routine and when i'm watching tv at nite, she will go to the same place to pee poo (yes, she poo 3 to 4 times a day!) without me asking her to... in the beginning there will be accidents when she forgets where to do her business, but subsequently ok dy... i'm so happy! otherwise i'll hv to mop and mop and mop the floor...

all the best k! Smile

Sorry for the late reply, did not have the time to log for some time due to work and also the 2 new pups.

They are doing fine and a friend of mine who just love stray mutts have adopted them from me. Was kinda hard to let them go as I got pretty attached to them after almost a month.

I also brought them to a vet to get them checked out after discovering one of them had fleas all over his underside. Vet says that they are in good health except for the flea problem. After that bought a flea collar and also Frontline to treat it. I have to say it works really good! Fleas were dropping of after couple of hours of usage!

How do you guys prevent fleas & ticks? I understand from my friend that if you let your dog out in the garden, it'll most definately get them. Is that true?

I'll be goin to my friend's house to check on them again later tonite.

oh the pups hv been adopted? great! Smile

yeah frontline works if u apply it correctly on the dog... if the garden is already tick/ flea infested, then surely it has to be treated with anti tick/ flea sprays, otherwise the dog sure will kena... sometimes if there are strays in the area, the tick/ flea could also end up in ur garden... i dun hv a garden, but my dog will sometimes get tick/ flea when i take her out for a walk... Unsure

take some photos of the pups n post them up here ok? Cool

Hey you have a very cute looking bulldog there! So adorable!

It's so rare to see a bulldog in Malaysia. I love bulldogs and I'm so amazed by the transformation of this breed from being a very aggresive character to such a docile & friendly character over the years.

Both me and another Uni mate of mine fell in love with the Bulldogs while we were studying in Manchester. You can see so many lovable Bulldogs back there.

It's pretty costly to purchase one here right?

my dog is a pug... hehe... pugs n bulldogs hv the similar flat face which i just love! Laugh

i do not support buying pets... i adopted my pug from spca selangor... there are many homeless animals, be it cats or dogs, pedigree or mongrel... so why not save a life by adopting? Wink

Oops! My bad for mistaking your Pug for a Bulldog...

Not that I disagree with you on adopting dogs from SPCA / PAWS, I think most people would have no choice but to buy from pet shops as it is trying for most ppl to get in touch with a breeder. So their 1st stop is always the pet shop.

Personally I like all dogs in general, be it a mongrel or a purebreed. The only thing about mongrels that concerns me is that you don't really know their full size or their general characteristics. Sometimes it could be a nice surprise or it could be a bad one if it grows too big than you expect it to be.

Re: [Mumbles] A dog lover checking in... [In reply to] Can't Post

understand yr point of view... Smile i think awareness abt homeless animals and adoption is still low... most 1st time dog owners would think of going to a pet shop to buy the breed they want becoz that is the only place they know where a puppy is available for sale, and many would not have even done any research on the breed to find out if the breed would suit their lifestyle... i could go on n on abt this, but i wun la... Tongue

my point is, awareness and education is very important... there is always a choice to buy or to adopt, depending on what the person is looking for... i am not 100% against buying, but i always tell ppl NOT to buy from pet shops n i tell them abt backyard breeders, etc n always buy from a reputable breeder, if they really hv to buy... of coz adoption is always better, at least in my book... Cool even spca and paws has many pedigrees for adoption, not only mongrels...

but breeding for the sake of breeding, to make profit, and becoz the person simply wants to have more dogs is a huge NO NO! Mad

Re: [ai_ney] A dog lover checking in... [In reply to] Can't Post

Yeah most of them won't bother researching it before purchasing a dog. They just buy it cos they like the way it looks and that's it. After that, it's downhill all the way.

It's good to know there are ppl like you around to drive awareness about backyard breeders. But again, I have to say it is pretty tough for a person to find a reputable breeder. It seems to me that even in this forum, it's a closely knit community that most newbies get shot down or blasted by some senior members here. What more out of this forum.

I do not fault the senior members here cos some of them are really asking for it but I do pity some whom I think are misunderstood or did not phrase/word their postings properly. I believe that you guys must have really bad experience with some freeloaders who come in here to ask for free purebreds. But then again, what fun is there in a forum if there aint no flame wars right? hahahha...

Hey, I have a mate who's looking for a JRT but do not want to buy it from a petshop or a backyard breeder. Do you know of any reputable JRT breeders cos he can't seem to get in touch with one.

Re: [Mumbles] A dog lover checking in... [In reply to] Can't Post

i have to admit, i did not know much abt pugs when i adopted my dog... it happened just like tat, becoz she had bladder stone n will be put down if no1 adopts, so i decided to adopt her... she's my very first dog, n luckily, she suits my lifestyle perfectly... Angelic of coz there are a few sacrifices i had to make, like less going out at nite to be with my dog since i work in the day time... my point is, it will not always be downhill if the owner commits to having a dog, is willing to make little changes to his/her lifestyle, n the owner must be willing to learn more abt the dog... Smile

i hear wat u're saying abt this forum... sometimes it gets nasty... Crazy i was browsing thru a US pug forum n i hv to say, i admire the way they share information... altho sometimes, some newbies here deserves all the tembak-ing they get! the current one who wants to cross breed is a good example... Cool

i do not have any contacts of any breeders... coz i strongly suggest ppl to adopt ma... Tongue if i know of a jrt for adoption, i'll let u know, ok... or ask ur mate to visit spca... u just wun know wat dog is being surrendered there... once there was a mini poodle, really mini, very smart (being a poodle) n adorable... can u believe it? she ended up in spca becoz the owner couldn't commit... sigh... Unsure or u can post in the jrt thread, maybe some jrt owners could provide info on a reputable breeder...

Yeah that bugger who wants to crossbreed is one hell of a wanker! Maybe he should crossbreed his kids instead!

Having a new pup is really like having a baby. Have to go home early and not go out on the weekends. That was what I did the past month taking care of Caesar & Brutus. Saved me a whole lot of beer money tho! Hahahah...

Was at Pet Safari during lunch time (buying some treats for Caeser & Brutus bfore I see them this evening) and I saw this really adorable Bulldog going for 3K++. Cannot tahan!!!

There was also one dude there asking bout the pups for sale there. He wanted to buy a Husky for his 2 young daughters. (overheard that they were only aged 5yrs & 7yrs old) And of course the lady behind the counter was doin a real good sales pitch to him la. Eveything also can and the usual sales pitch of petshops "we only sell pups that are in good health and from good parents"

Felt so sad for the pups behind the glass windows.... Frown

i totally agree with what you guys said...

its a shame that the level of mentality and understanding of dogs are so low in Malaysia.... dogs are a joy to our household and not supposed to be a burden... they will become a burden when one has not enough time for the dog, hence the dog being naughty/doing things that we dont like... this is all because they want the attention... but alot of ppl do not understand this point and thus there are so many abandoned dogs around... some dogs need owners that are firm with them... some dogs do not like their owners to talk loudly with them etc etc....

therefore, by understanding and learning more about dogs, we will be able to accept that each dog is different... just like us humans...

Yeah, especially so when I'm a dog lover. I don't think I can have a dog yet due to my work hours. Not only it's not fair for the dog but its also not fair for me.. hahaha! I will miss my dog while at work!

With my kind of work, i can only have a pet stone

Only managed to take one picture last evening cos I forgot that I didn't charge my camera. Died on me after the 1st picture. Unsure Must go back again this weekend to see them.

All those out there just want a dog cos they see a cute dog that their friends have & they have to get one themselves.

It is always cute and adorable when it's not yours. Just like having a baby, everyone loves playing with a baby but when the baby poo-poo they will quickly hand it back to the parents.

They will only see the good side of it but not "burdening" side of it.
