Should I get my puppy (18 weeks old) tested for worms before giving her Heartgard?
From what I understand (through the threads I have been going through here), puppies below 6 months will test negative so there is no point in testing.
It explains over there by Doctor that it takes 6 mths for the larvae to transform into worms..n blood test is only to test for presence of adult worms..

Hi all,
My pup is currently 5 months, I bring him for heartworm checking last few days. However, vet advice to have blood test 1st. Charge me RM100 for the blood test and 2 tablets.
He told me deworm is already included, feed him once per month. Would like to know is this a common practise among all?

Hi Chris, he told me to give 1 tablet monthly for my puppy. ( I purchased 2, for 2 months) This tablet is the combination of heartworm + deworm. Meaning that I do not need to deworm my puppy again. Is it advisable?

I heard a bit different about the testing thingy, the heartworm test is only necessary for dog older than 6 months old which not on heartworm prevention previously, why 6 months leh? my vet told me is because of the heartworm test can only detect heartworm after period of >6months (when baby worm become mama worm)... i'm kind of confuse with that, but she said the general rule is if less than 6months old, can start heartworm prevention without testing, if more than 6months old, must test, if positive go for treatment; if negative than go for prevention and she also told me that the best time for prevention is to start at 2 months old??? whatever lah

since NONE dog died of heartworm infection? then why bother to give heartworm prevention? For me i didnt hear and see (i wish it wont happen in front of me) any cases of dog died of heartworm infection YET, maybe there were but just I didnt see/heard ENOUGH of the dogs in my life, and i wont make that conclusion.. For the 2 months prevention issue, i need to ask my vet again the next time i bring my doggie for checkup....

This raise question wherether it is necessary we need to gave heartworm prevention to our dog at all?
I meet a reputable breeder about 8 years back. All his dogs are not on heartworm prevention but all live & die till old age with no heartworm problem. I was advice by him no need gave heartworm prevention. But I still gave to my dogs till now just to be on the safe side right
Should I stop or continue giving? Hmmmmm.................

reputable breeder and vet....hard to choose who to believe actually, both are experience, breeder is very good in dog's behavior, lifestyle, particularly breeding (maybe more), another one in treating the animals and seeing patients everyday...... For me, i will play safe and wont take the risk.........

I just bring my 4 months old puppy to one of the vet in Nusa Bestari, Skudai. As according to the vet, she advise me to gv an injection, proHeart (if I can remember correctly) to my puppy as heartgard is only good for up to kill worm that less than 30 days.
According to the vet, the injection is more convenient as only need to take an injection every 6 months.
Just wanted to check with the expert here, is what the vet said correct on the heartgard effectiveness on worm of up to 30 days? Pls advise.

Yes at this age, 6months once jab is good as their weight is still changing. It is effective as long as your dog is not yet a year old. AFter a year old a test needs to be done before giving the jab. After a year old you can do yearly jab. For smaller breeds it is actually cheaper to give yearly jab(RM80++) than to give the monthly tabs..

The vet charge me RM50 as my pup weight only ard 500gm. The pup will need another test on heartworm after 6 months, if the result is positive need to start on heartgard else can continue with the injection.

sounds a bit strange to me..Feel strange that at this age it is already on prevention how to be tested positive. Furthermore heartworm doesn't develop overnight. It takes months.. Anyway the vet knows better..
