Distemper Can't Post

As many of you are aware that Distemper virus are air borne and my vet always tell me that a dog carrying distermper virus may even infect a dog that is 1 kilometer away.

My point of discussion today is since many of the animal clinics bound to have patients with Distemper infection from time to time, how safe is it to bring your young very young puppies there for vaccination ?

What choice have you got? It's a chance you have to take.
However, later on I will provide certain precautionary measures that perhaps could minimise a young puppy from contracting the distemper, be it accidentally or unintentionally.

I just thought of vaccination by ourselves? I know some breeders which did vaccination by their own. For this, where could we get the vaccine? Will any VET sell the vaccine to public?

I have a vet who makes housecalls. It's so much more convenient since I can't drive and my parents are always reluctant to bring the dog anywhere in their cars (They don't want their cars to smell of my dog!)

This may sound selfish but I really dread taking my dogs to the vet. God knows what they can catch from there?? Fleas..ticks..mites..some virus??

And people vary in the way they take care of their dogs...some wait until the dog's skin disease/condition is really serious then only they take to see vet and when you wait with these dogs/owners you think why can't these people take better care of their dog..I bet the dog has never been bathed..all kinds of thoughts come into mind..there was once I saw a dog who was quite dirty and had ticks..and when the dog went into the examing room, ticks were all over the floor!!

Damn Gross!! Okay enough said..Unsure You should get my point..

Most breeders like Sifu Derrick (ahem ahem) Smile usually have good ties/friendship with vets after visiting them for donkey years so I should imagine they can get the vaccination from their vet friends easier and inject their doggies if they want to lar.....but then again..if they are so good friends..probably they make house call cheep cheep also..Smile

Personally, i can't imagine injecting my doggie myself..kind of scary..after poke needle wrong place susah!

Re: [Rainbow] Distemper [In reply to] Can't Post

I dig your garden = I bet your pardon, Even though the vet has very good relationship with you or a very good friend of yours or for that matter he is your grandfather, the vet is breaking the law by just selling you the vaccine. He could get himself deregistered and banned from practice. Besides, the profit margin for one vaccination of 6 in 1 is something like 300 to400%. So, do you think a vet will throw that kind of profit out the window?
Anyway, there are certain things in this forum just cannot be explained, so I am afraid I have no further comment. But if you wish to minimise the puppy from contracting distemper at the clinic, and if the vet is friendly with you, you could request for the vet to jab the puppy in the waiting car and after that you settle the bill in the clinic.
If you poke needle wrong place tidak susah, pull needle out again and poke right place loh. Repeat until doggie is like a dart board, mesti cari tempat betul Sly

walau... poke so much... If I did that with my GSD, she would run away from me and never come near for the next few days... If I did it to my Dobbie, she'd just bear the pain but hate me for life.. hehe

Poke a needle into your dog is quite a simple job, don't worry, Rainbow ... I think you can do that too if you got chance!Wink

The right position is on top of the neck, and I think puppy won't feel the painCrazy...

Re: [Khoobg] Distemper [In reply to] Can't Post

Is it too late to continue with this discussion on distemper?

I want to know if anyone has brought home a dog with distemper, and then later brought home another dog (which was unvaccinated). Did the 2nd dog contract the disease?

I thought that the distemper virus did not live as long as the parvo virus.

Anyone who has had this experiance? How did you disinfect? Pls share. thanks.

Bet your last dollar that should you bring home a distemper dog, the one that is healthy and not vaccinated will stand 99.9% will get too and then you are certain to lose 2 dogs.
Quite frankly speaking, there has never been any research in Malaysia as to the life span of the virus. Some says 2 weeks, some shiver goats will say one month.
Your method of using Glorox which is ordinary house hold bleach is very effective.
You have heard of that TV series Ghostbuster. In Subang Jaya, very near to you have a Virusbuster.
Keep in touch, Inky is around.

uncleeeeeeeeeeeeee deriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiccccccckkkkkkkkkkUnsure OUR VET SAID 6 months!!!!!!!! how laaaaaaa????? Am worried, so this saturday hubby and I are doing a 'chlorox-cleaning' session again!! The cage we have is new. Our vet told me that his friend had a distempered dog in a cage. After it died, he washed the cage etc etc. And after a FEW WEEKS, he transferred another dog in that same cage and that was enough for the 2nd dog to contract the virus! I have been having nightmares since then.

I have not only washed with chlorox, I have bought the chlorox spray (new in the market , RM 14.90) and sprayed areas which could not be washed (which were none, because I even washed the walls, the windows, the ceiling, the outside of the house since there were stray cats in the area etc ).

Anyway, we only hope to collect the pup about 10-12 days after it has received its 6 in 1 vaccination in ipoh. we have dicussed 'boarding' the pup in Subang Wink until it receives its 2nd dose of the 6 in 1, but I need to discuss it further with my hubby. At the moment it is still with its litter mates.

I have read some stuff online about the life span of the viruses, but its different in cold climates, as compared to ours. There the viruses live longer.

Re: [melanie] Distemper [In reply to] Can't Post

Distemper is a virus that will attack the nerve system of the puppy.
To describe to you the symptoms, I need to write a book. Even though you understood every word, what good would it do? Because distemper is 99.9% jalan mati.
Best thing for you to do is to visit the vet and ask for a confirmation and if it is distemper, say goodbye to puppy.

Re: [melanie] Distemper [In reply to] Can't Post

DistemperMad
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, distemper is the “greatest single disease threat to the world’s dog population. Better than 50 percent of the adult dogs that contract the disease die from it. Among puppies, the death rate from distemper often reaches 80 percent.” Distemper affects other animals as well; raccoons, coyotes, wolves, foxes, ferrets, skunks, weasels, mink, badgers, hyenas, and jackals can also catch the disease and a population of lions in Africa has been decimated by it. The virus is spread through secretions in saliva, respiratory passages, urine, and feces and by inhalation of airborne droplets from sneezes and coughs. There is a difference of opinion about the longevity of the virus in the environment, with some sources saying it does not survive for extended periods and others saying that the virus can survive freezing in winter. Whether it is long-lived or not, there’s no doubt that distemper is widespread and potentially deadly. The most common victim is an unvaccinated pup between the ages of three months and eight months. However, older dogs can contract the disease as well if they have not been vaccinated or if their immunity is incomplete.

About half of infected dogs – those with strong immune systems – show little or no symptoms of the disease. In other dogs, the illness is mild. In those dogs with compromised immune symptoms, the disease and its secondary infections can be serious or even fatal.

Distemper symptoms Frown
Distemper may be misdiagnosed in its early stages because it begins as an upper respiratory infection resembling a cold., including fever of 103-105 degrees (normal for a dog is 100-102.5), loss of appetite, listlessness, and a watery discharge from eyes and nose. But dogs do not get colds like people do, so if these symptoms arise with a puppy, call the veterinary clinic immediately. Within a few days, the discharge turns yellow and becomes thick and sticky and the pup has a dry cough, and may have diarrhea and vomiting. Within the first two weeks of the disease, the symptoms fluctuate.
Some dogs shake off the disease after this stage, but others progress into pneumonia and neurological involvement. Seizures, encephalitis, partial paralysis, head-tilting, chorea (jerking or twitching) and other neurological signs can follow. Some dogs also experience a hardening of the nose leather and the footpads. Even if the initial disease has been mild, these symptoms can show up weeks later.

The virus can also persist in the system, attacking the spleen, thymus gland and lymph nodes of the immune system and creating immune deficiencies that allow bacterial infections to gain hold.

This is another site on antibody reponses conducted on 10 pups. There might be useful info for the more experienced breeders at this site too. Wink
