Need Help.. Can't Post

What exactly does Obedience Training do?? If it can train my Hazel to listen to me for once, take notice of me and the big bright road straight ahead only and to STOP PULLING for once, I'll be willing to dish out my allowance.

I mean, take today for example:

Walking her as usual. Wanted to try Sydney's way fo training your dog not to take notice of anything else, with a treat. Two corner houses have huge dogs, one I'm friends with((The one named by me, Midnight)). So I brought her there only to teach her not to take notice. Err.. then she barked and pulled me along towards Midnight who in turn, growled. Then the other dog barked and Hazel dragged me across. The owner came out but only said 'Becareful lar'. I was about to say 'Restrain your dog then!' but I only muttered 'I know...'.

She pulls me everyday. Very fedup liao. Try so many tricks also never work. The stick also never work, she just don't take notice. Like to pick up rubbish also. Scared she get this Parvo or was it Distemper from eating the other doggie poo.

Despreate already. My dad takes her out but chokes her.. Always give me excuse like 'No lar! She's not choking' Ahem.. if you listen to the sound of a choke collar in motion you'll know the choking sound. Puppy.com offer training but not near my place. Any where near DJ, PJ, DU, BU area? Got cheap((Less than RM250)) training???

Mostly hyper-active dogs react like this.. Smile. You can start by the basics like sit stay or downCool. Restraining ur dog is quite easy.. Put ur hand gently in front of ur dog's chestUnimpressed and pull the leash slighty behind u.. That tec will prevent ur dog from pulling or dragging uCool. I cant do it on sidney cs he's 2 small and really fastFrownso i cant catch up wif him.

Urrgh.. not really sure if I want to try that experience over again. And the dog's owner stood there like a brick, as though she had seen it happen before! Goodness.. Why can't I have DECENT neighbours? Instead of those who complain about Hazel being noisy((NEVER)) Mad.

Hyper? Awwh man, and I thought she had lots of energy. Not sugar-high like hyper... like me Smile. She knows, Sit((80%)), Stay((60%)), Stand((20%)) and Wait((for food or treats. 1st trick she doesn't mess up with Sit. 100%)). I just thought her Stand. 2 days and she got it! Quite clever and knows Shake Hands and Lick Me, the 'leisure' tricks.

I might try that at home. She follows me like a shadow at home. Outside it's a different story. Umm how to put my hand in front of her chest? I can barely keep up with her!

Just worried now. How 2 take her 2 the Central Park meet? She might play in the car with Happie((Fren's doggie)) and she plays roughly since she's umm big. Happie is smaaaall. I brought her to Central Park before. Ok to control but dogs like to sniff her and she gets all playful. Hazel set in Play-Mode. She has Guard-Mode too.. and that mode isn't pretty.

Last Q b4 I go 2 sleep.. just back from tuition. Tired like heck..

Where to spay Hazel? We've been to this useless clinic run by a few Indian guys. The vet sounds hopeless. No customers either. UPM, a bit far. The vet we normally go to has a clinic in Bangi or something. Near Seremban. FAAARRR! We've checked out this Eurasian's clinic in DU. Ain't bad sounding. And gonna check out Dillon's Clinic in Sys. 11. How many days 2 recover? Want to spay Hazel next Saturday... Frown. How 2 bring her then?? She will not want to miss this!

U restrain Hazel first the hold back her chest. U dun have 2 run just tugg at her leash and u walk front instead of waaaa lintang pukangLaughLaughLaugh. Sidney trick:

Sit(100%)

Up(70%)

Off(79%)

On(100%)

Roll over(90%)Getting better

Paw(100%)

High 5(80%)

Gong Xi(90%)

Jump(90%)

Stay/down(85%)

Wait(70%)

All the tricks weirder than ever...

Dun go 2 the clinik wif indian guys maybe they put bad stuff in the medicine. I wouldnt even want 2 call them vetsCool. Try 2 go 2 a better vet like the Dillon clicic. where did u stay exactly. i too stay at pj , but i don't feel that tmn desa is far for me. there is also another training class, organize by _ . _ . _ at old town ,pj. which cost the same actually.

the obedience class teach heeling, sit, stand and stay mostly. i'm 100% sure u can really improve ur dog, if u had the initiative to train ur dog consistently at home.

but as for me i don't really apply the heeling skills i learnt went i go to park with my dog. coz whenever i want her to heel during daily walk, she'll look distress and doesn't seems to be happy at all.

and i really want her to enjoy herself without having to follow any rules so i will not force her to heel.

but this is due to my dog behaviour. i don't meant that it happen in every dog.

as for ur fetching game, is kinda weird that ur dog does chase the item u throw.

whatever things that i throw , can be eaten or not, my dog will become very attracted to the moving item and will automatically chase for it without any command. then all i need to do is to get her back to me using food. (if no food, she'll not return the item to me).

maybe u can try throwing her favourite toy or ball that will bounce, hopefully he'll be interested to that.

happy training

HOw old is ur dog? if ur dog is already more tha 6 months, & never been trained b4 that, it might be harder to train them. but sometimes owner also should be prepared, dont expect a dog to be attracted by u if u behave just like a tree for them (of corse i dont mean anybody here) try to be more attractive, attractive in the sense that be MORE active, talk with ur dog, walk happily.. then ur dog might give more attention to u. patient is an important point, ur dog never angry of u for not understanding her language, so do u should.

Re: [Everyone] Need Help.. [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for your support.. But please read my post in Me and My Dog.

Yeah, I guess she was never trained to walk. I got her at 5 months old. Oh, so thats what they teach there. I taught her that myself. I stay in DJ area. She heels me naturally at home. Outside, she takes the chance to walk in front of me. I keep her more focus by running but it increases the danger. She looks at me when I run and easy to slow down but walking pull like a wild tiger.

Hehe, I throw the Kong. It took a while to train her that. In the beginning, I just throw and she'll chase it and lie down to chew it. I call her and she'll come with it. I show her the food and she'll drop it. I say 'Drop'. It's a fun game and I train her how to drop stuff she picks up on the roadside. Sometimes I throw it without command. Thats means she doesn't need to bring it back to me. Now I throw and say Fetch, she'll fetch and bring it to me without recieving food. Quite good now Smile. If I leave an item on the ground and say the command, she pick it up and bring it to me SmileSmile. I'm so proud of that trick.

Oh yah Toy, Hazel is 7 months old. Yeah, Teenager soon. Gonna die. I talk to her but she just pull. I stop when she pulls but it gets annoying when she winds herself around me. I try to walk happily, and not like a block of wood but she look at me once and take it into her head to pull. Oh, she can't resist chasing cats. I mean, can any dog? But dogs I've seen ignore anything except the road ahead and their owners.

Sorry for the long post. I've been trained not to double post in various forums. I hope you can help me. Before my dad gives Hazel up and gets another dog. The circle of problems arises once more then.

My dog not that talented. But I don't know where she learns these things. I never teach also know. Like got a secret training manual at the back of her brain.

Wah, can speak? I can spend hours talking to pet shop birds but they never reply. Just twitter and do bird stuff. Honestly, I think fishes are the most boring pets in the world. But we keep them anyway. Just they become sashimi for the four-legged one if they aren't careful. Yuck. Birds are a bit more interesting. Can talk! Some..

Hi .Lab,

Just caught your problem, not sure if this will help but do try it you have about a week. Use one of those retractable leash and work your dog outside your house. 1. Walk it at heel and when he wonders off make a 360 turn and yank him calling for it and telling it to heel, keep doing it all the time till you feel you have tuckered it out, rest and do it again until it realise you are the leader and not him. I train my dogs with electronic training collar and it does cost a bit but I got my three years old Weimeraner to do heel work in a week and my five months old doberman to do the same in a month, perfect heel that is, the dob is still unstable, very hyper with other dogs but controllable, she is one just a few days ago. The both of them started off with heel training the same way. try it and see, a week of hard work may just do the trick. oh, use a choke collar. Good luck.

Hi,

the e-collar is like a choke collar but not as aggressive, it is like one of those electrical massager whereby it keeps reminding the dog to pay attention to you. As for the collar do use the choke collar, don't yank it hard but enough for it to know the attention is on the boss. Try not to shout at it, just a fast turn at the same time "Hazel heel" and just walk until she turn and catches up with you, once she is at your side phrase her by saying "good heel" and once she is wondering to far a head turn again. The general idea is pay attention to you. Do hope it works and you can go to the gathering. Have fun.

try this way, whenever ur dog pull the leash, u stop. wait til the dog settle down & sit. once the dog sit, u start walk again, if the dog pull again, u stop. repeat this & let ur dog's mind is set to pull means stop, follow means go. i know it might need sometimes to wait for the dog to settle down, but believe me, dog will stop & sit anyway. then u can start walking again. again, be patient, this is the key.

Re: [.Lab] Need Help.. [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Lab,

First thing u got to know is that 1 hard correction is better than 10,000 soft ones. The hard one would stick in ur dogs mind for some time where as the 10,000 would be nagging.

Try using a prong/pinch collar. They are much safer & effective than choke chains. Prong/pinch collars may look nasty but they are safer. The choke chain suffocates the dog where as the prong/pinch collar only pinches the skin.

First the meaning of "no" has to be drilled into ur dogs head. No means no regardless of situation or surroundings. I think u got that done except that u r unable to correct her when she walks. Basically, when she pulls, tell her a firm "no" n jerk the pinch collar. Not pull. but a sudden jerk. It is up to u to find out how hard to jerk in order to find the level necessary to gain her attention & realize that u mean business.

This is the usual method & it normally works when the correction given is hard enough.Don't forget to praise for good behaviour.
