ECS Lover - a Malaysian in Beijing, PRC [In reply to] Can't Post

I was looking for an article about getting a dog and bumped into this super cool dog website. That was about 5 days ago and yesterday, I just bought a female ECS.

Initially, I was contemplating whether I should get a smaller or larger dog, but being in Beijing, there is a rule that dogs with approximately 35cm and above in height are not allowed in the city. So, I decided to settle with a smaller dog.

My girlfriend and I have been frequenting a pet shop in my neighbourhood since late last year and more than a month ago, we noticed that the pet shop was selling a female ECS. We were quoted with a price of RMB2000 (approx. RM900++) when we asked the first time. But the price dropped to RMB1000 when we asked again a few days ago. I bet they were just desperate to sell her off, and I felt pity to see her in the cage everytime we go to that shop. After doing a lot of thinking, I decided to bring her home.

I named her Pony and she just turned 3 months yesterday.

If you guys are interested, I can share some stories about the booming pet industry in China. Dogs are getting sooooo popular unlike a few decades ago when only the riches can own dogs.

Anyway, it's great to see fellow Malaysians posting on this site, feels so much at home. Smile

Re: [vicfion] ECS Lover - a Malaysian in Beijing, PRC [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Fiona,

Thank you for your welcome message! Feels really fabulous to be here. I've posted a message somewhere inside this forum about raising Pony, but since this is a topic on Cocker Spaniels, I thought of posting the following message here as well:

Hello guys! Smile

I have a 3 months old female English Cocker Spaniel named Pony. I got her about 10 days ago. It's my first time ever owning a dog. I've read quite a handful of tips on raising a puppy but I would like to post my daily routine with my puppy just to make sure I'm doing things right. I would definitely appreciate if you can correct me for whatever you think I've done something wrong. Blush

Let me start off from daybreak:

6AM

- Wake up and bring Pony downstairs to my apartment compound. Usually she would pee first and we continue walking around the complex for about 10-15 minutes.

- Go back and I would be getting ready for work. I would let her play around with her toys while I'm in the washroom. I let her roam around the kitchen area which is next to the washroom.

7AM

- Just before I leave, I would fill up her water tray. When I'm ready to go, then I'll put food into her feeding tray, leave a toy and a chewable bone into her crate. Then I lock the crate. I'm sure most of you would think it's cruel to lock her inside her crate but I would like to avoid her from destructing the furnitures of my rented apartment. I definitely won't mind if it's my own place.

- When I leave, she would be eating and too busy to notice me going out. I've read before that it's better to leave quietly as to avoid her being over excited, which in turn can reduce the separation anxiety.

7AM to 4.30PM AT WORK, HOME BY 5.30PM

- I know!!! It's soooo bad to leave her alone for such a long period of time. I feel really bad about this already.

- When I arrive home, she would start barking as she knows it's me going into the apartment. I don't show my excitement but will smile to her and call her name and ask how is she doing. I would immediately let her out of the crate and carry her downstairs. By the way, I heard it's not really advisable to carry a puppy?

- She hasn't peed or pooed in her crate lately, but she did for the first few days when I just got her.

- Downstairs, she would definitely poo and pee - I give her a lot of praises for this. Then we'll walk around for about half an hour or so just to let her socialise. The open space is quite big so I don't usually leash her. Most of the time she would walk closely with me. She has no problem coming to me when I call her name.

6.30PM

- Feed her while I settle down. She would finish her food within 10 minutes. Then I play, cuddle, talk with her.

- For the rest of the evening, she would just accompany me and play while I watch TV and doing other stuff. I also play fetch with her in the house plus a bit of basic obedience training - just started with the "SIT" command. How do I make her look at me when I call her name during training? I usually use one of her favourite toys to attract her attention but it seems she's more attracted to the toy than to my face. Laugh

10.30PM

- Take her downstairs again to let her pee or poo. She would do both usually. We go up as soon as she's finished doing her business.

11.00PM

- Ready for bed: she sleeps next to my bed on a super comfy dog mattress.

- I leave the crate door open so she has access to water.

2.00AM - 3.00AM

- Most of the time I would assume she would pee inside the crate, but for the past few nights around 2AM or 3AM, I see her going to the crate for water and pee next to the crate! Is there any way to avoid this? Or should I just wait until she has better bladder control? There is no way for me to check her around this time of the night. I get a bit worried when she's started to walk around the apartment in the middle of the night (I live in a studio apartment so the area is not big). I'm a light sleeper too so I'm usually awaken when she starts walking around the house.

6.00AM - WAKE UP TIME AND ANOTHER DAY BEGINS...

It would be great to get some tips from you guys... I'm here in China and it's quite difficult to talk to someone with a common background and language about this. Thank you guys! Wink

Hey no worries... You are doing all right.. I am not a good owner either... I may not doing things right too.. Now with kids, I have lesser time for my dogs too... I cannot wait til my son can walk that I can have my dogs roam around the house during the day.. I keep them out when my son has to crawl on the floor.. Poor things.. They keep asking to let in the house :( Fiona

Hi my ACS Tasha is buff color and is now 7+ mths old too. Pretty hard to train Tasha to sit still. She is very "tam chiak" when comes to food, she will jump around like crazy. Sometimes can even jump over my head & shoulder. Further to that, each time when I come home, she will jump on me and pee at the same time Unsure. Now she has developed a habit, each time she sees me, she wants to pee. I have to quickly lead her to toilet and lock her up for 1 min before letting her out. Really don't know how to discipline her. She doesn't seem to get the message at all.

I had many dogs before, but never encounter such behaviour, and really cannot understand her.

Tasha is my first American Cocker. I fell in love with her beautiful face and silky curly coat. My Tasha is quite a good companion dog, hardly bark or making any noise and very gentle towards children. The only thing I dislike about her is when she overly excited in seeing us when we got home.

Hopefully this behaviour will out-grown when she is older. None of your ECS having such problem??

I came across many websites caution about Cocker Spaniel having such hyper, high-strung character due to overly breeding. I thought that only happened in US, didn't realize in Malaysia I face the same problem too.

Most of the dogs could differentiate the car's engine sound and footstep sound.

Tasha would normally wait at the door-side when we are away or when we are in the room sleeping. She has quite a good patient in waiting.

Hihy i jus hav my ACS 1mths ago... [In reply to] Can't Post

Very happy tat finally i can get my very 1st ACS.Mocha is 5mths old now with buff color coat.As i read all of the forum here.Hahaha...finally i know all ACS nearly have the similiar attitude.Everytime i come back frm work Mocha oso will jumping in the crate bcoz no choice i need to lock him inside to avoid him keep on damaging my things Crazy wen i reach home, his crate usually ll full of poo.usually he wont step on it til i get nearer to let him out so i can clear his place but the worst things is he is too excited n keep on stepping on the poo.sigh...got no choice need to clean him as well.

Actually is very hard if i go to work w/o lock him bcoz i stay in condo. No outdoor 4him.Now he managed to go bathroom to pee/poo but not on the newspaper tat i place 4him to pee/poo on it.i m thinking how to paper train him.If i jus left him freely he ll bite the newspaper n my carpet.

The very 1st week i bring him back to my house, every nite he ll growling in the crate need companion i think. After a week he used with the environment he get better to sleep alone. So sorry tat i really got not much time with him.Anyway now i able to train him sit, stay, down and hand but he ll look for the treat onli will show his tricks.if my hand didnt carry anything he ll jus look at me n didnt do anything i ask him to do.

Now i enroll him to training course by puppy.com hope he ll behave better later.

Esther, I also stay in Condo, but I let my dogs roaming freely even nobody is at home.

Why don't you try put Mocha's cage inside the toilet, and don't lock his cage but the toilet door. At least he could do his poo & pee business on the toilet floor. In this manner, he gets to walk around within the toilet and also get used to pee & poo inside the toilet. Easy for you to clean that as well.

Once he is accustomed to that habit, you could then open the toilet door, let him roam freely while you are away (provided he does not bite other furniture). Give him some toys then he won't bite your furniture.

I don't like to cage my dogs, I find that very pitiful with limited space to move for such a long hour.

Mocha is still young, he is still exploring things which are new to him....Tongue His behaviour will settle down once he reaches 1 yr old or more.

Congratulation about your new ACS :)
Puppies are like that.. We need to be patient (Sigh, I don't even have patient).. They had been driving me crazy so I told myself in the future when I want another dog, I will adopt an older one say 5 years old or so :) Good luck with your ACS.. Fiona
