Hi Tuckfook,

Sorry for my late reply! Sad to heard that you lost your APB x Boxer. But I think this similar case always happen rite for bringing doggies for hunting.

I have a female PB, I think she will on-heat soon. I prefer to breed with APBT or maybe breed with my boxer.

How you go for Hunting? by 4WD or Honda EX5? Last week always raining, It should be many boars come out from jungle rite?

Hi,

Yes the rain is good for hunting as the boars come nearer into the kampungs.

I use a scrambler when I go hunting. The EX5 is probably the most versatile of all but I travel from Penang and cub is too slow !

Anyone welcome to join us for a hunt. Just email me to make arrangements.

Tuckfook.

Re: [tuckfook] Dogs for hunting wild boars [In reply to] Can't Post

Ok, first of all. Hunting, why? Not enough food? Thirst for blood? Don't get me worn, personal opinion. I am against hunting since we are not hungry enough to do that. Imagine you kill the animal for game. My principle is you can take what you need to survive from the mother nature.

For the selection of breed, I think our local dog is the best especially those not too tall. The slightly short legged one is excellent as they can go in between bushes and branches relatively easily. They are agile and brave. But the most important is the lead dog. Experience wild boar will always have very good lead dog and they are willing to spend for the lead dog. It is not easy to find a good lead dog.

Pittbull is not suitable. It is too aggressive. They will charge the first thing they see the boar unlike the local dogs which will "herd" or isolate the boar and attract the hunter attention. You will always find pittbull with broken spine and broken leg on wild boar hunting. Wild boar's task is strong to rip open anything but the jaw is also very powerful to crush bones.

Great Dane might be good for Europe and American kind of corniferous jungle but definitely no in our tropical jungle. Can't move unless you use parang to clear a path for the dog. Waste of time if you ask me.

Well that's my opinion. anyone want to add?

Hi TuckFook,

I just came across this post...looks interesting...i am from pg...i go Kulim quite often to visit my uncle...i may wan to join but i dont have bike or scrambler...actually i dunno how ride kekkeke....but any way besides the leech that everyone hates...are there any other setbacks? will it be dangerous? because of the gun and dogs Shocked

but as what i was told, ppl catch hogs there by baiting them into a loop of rope that is tie up to a log, when the loop caught a hog, there is no way out, the big log will entangle wilth all the trees making manuevering impossible and hog that run havoc will get entagle more with the tree trunks around.

Hi,

Hunting has it's dangers and risks that as hunters, we are prepared to take.

Boars do attack and have been known to kill people. Hunters do have accidents and shoot each other.

Other than that, it can be safe and exciting.

What you described is using a noose trap to snare wildboars. That is an illegal practice which carries a heavy fine and jail penalty. Of course many people do try to snare animals but I am against such practice.

ic...i dont know that snaring is illegal... i heard foreign workers use this to catch

most of the dogs from a chicken farm around there lost one of their feet...

btw, why do you against snaring? it is because of law or?

have you manage to breed the perfect dog for the boar hunt? you are not using the hold type dogs right? what are the combination in your hunting pack?

interested to know

When a boar is snared, it will not escape the pain and suffering for a long time...until it is killed. It may escape by breaking off a leg and then it'll be difficult for it to feed and protect itself.

Shooting takes a fraction of the time to put it away.

I am using beagles and beagle crossed with local dogs to hunt. Both equally good except that beagles make a distinctive howl.

Tuck Gor , i went for hunting few times also. But normally just being a spectator lo. Hunting in the evening is more exciting. Cuz can really see those will boar run like headless chicken when those dogs charge towards them. And sometimes my uncle dogs able to catch some small wild boar , around 40-60k. Then rifle bullet also save. Pakai parang can gao dim that wil boar d. My uncle prefer to see those dogs bitting those boars. So any suitable dogs for that heavy duty ? Have u tried to use pitsxvege dogs to hunt ?

Re: [OmgPuppy!] Dogs for hunting wild boars [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

I've been using pit x vege several gen. dog and still have a few. They are a LITTLE less agressive towards the boars but still bad enough to get injured regularly.

Had one injured a few weeks ago and on it first trip after recovery, it got bitten again. They just retain the agressiveness of Pits too much. This was a third generation cross. ie, Pit x vege = Pv, Pv x vege = Pvv, Pvv x vege = Pvvv and this was a Pvvv, stll retaining the traits of the Pit great grand father.

I now tend to want to use Beagle cross as they keep away from the pigs and also the vet fees down. I don't get anxious when the pig is cornered by the dogs as these dogs keep their distance.

A pit cross is a good candidate to corner boars, use several so that they can work together to hold the boar down. At least 4 if not more. Be prepared to visit the vet often and also bury your dogs eventually. Even in Australia, their suitably armoured dogs get killed.

I should have taken photos(too shocked to) of a Pv slit open at the throat by a big boar, from ear to ear, and we never got the boar nor was it injured at all.

But i think la,only a wild boar around 100k or above can brutally injure a dog. I think only la. But i can see many scars on those hunting dogs. My uncle said hunting at afternoon is not illegal, and its different when it comes to night. Is that true ? I'm not sure la. Btw, except wild boar, what else have u hunt b4 ? Leopard ??? Black Bear ?? Deer ??? King Cobra. So far i only see wilboar and black bear. So a pit that cross with vege for few times will still be kinda aggresive hu . . then pening lo. . .

Re: [OmgPuppy!] Dogs for hunting wild boars [In reply to] Can't Post

Most sexually mature boars will be about 60+kg and they will have 3" razor sharp tusks, fully capable of killing a dog with one slash in the right place.

Boars have a very thick and hard pad on their shoulders, about .5" thick hard skin and another .5" softer skin. This is so tough that sometimes shotgun bullets do not penetrate, yet we often see 6" plus slash wounds right through these pads, damage from contesting boars during mating.

No part of any dog is as tough.

I have seen a female charge at a dog and throw the dog 6' + into the air, landing 10'+ away. The same female bit into the belly area of another dog and tore it open, making a 12" wound, exposing the intestines. It was only about 50kgs when finally shot.

50kg+ boar, 1 to 1 a dog will always lose. With 2 dogs, maybe a stand off.

60kg+ male boar, with tusks will seriously hurt any dog that goes near.

Dogs only win the fight when several attack from all angles, biting at the testicles, ears and thighs, pulling the boar from all directions thereby disabling it.

The problem with a pit is that it usually attacks the boar face to face, with or without the help of its pack. So when the pack is not there to help, it'll fight a losing battle. The other major problem is that a pit will not retreat, so you can guess the result.

It is not a pretty sight and if you love dogs, as I do, do not use dogs with Pit genes to hunt boars.

Hunting for wild boars is only permitted between the hours of 7am to 7pm. Flying foxes, 7am to 11pm. All bears and large cats(panthers, tigers,) are totally protected, ie no hunting. Deer have an open season determined by the respective state, special permit required for the duration of 1 month. The hunting of any wild animal incl. birds, requires a permit issued by Perhilitan.

Eh Tuck Gor, thanks for the information. But maybe my estimation wrong d gua, maybe that boar is only 20-30k or lesser. I think that time got at least 6 vege bitting that boar. And my uncle use parang stab on the wild boar ( inside the front leg ). Then gao dim d. But if large boar then need rifle d.

Hello Tuck Fook,

Thanks for sharing with us your adventure. Let's keep them coming in. How often do you go hunting ? Beagle is a hunting dog by itself, why do you crossed them with local dogs ? Cheers.
