Pet shops warning	Can't Post

I bought a 2 months old red female miniature pinscher 2 weeks ago unfortunately she died 1 week after purchased from pet shop somewhere in PJ. The vet doctor suspected that she was attacked by virus which believe that it should be canine distemper disease.
The vacination record given by the pet shop's owner seems to be not a genuine one because it was only signed by a doctor with no proper doctor's name or clinic info.
I'm affraid to buy any puppies from Pet shops anymore, can some tell me how can get the breeder's info?

Hi Dave,

I suffered the same fate as yours when I purchased a puppy from Pet Shop at down town KL Petaling Street.

The puppy suffer severe Kennel Cough within 10 days after bringing puppy home. Admitted to animal hospital and tested positive for Canine Distemper. Treated with Human antibodies for more than 10 days without any improvement and the puppy was finally put to sleep.

While the pet shop was able to produce the vaccination record card but the card come with only signature without any vet clinic information and rubber stamp. Clearly it was the act of irresponsible pet shop or breeder who either did not vaccinate the puppy and simply try to vaccinate using poor quality vaccine or expired vaccine or demaged vaccine.

The pets shop is very congested and there is also high chance that distemper spread in the pet shop and those puppies without proper defend will suffer without doubt.

My advice is never buy puppies from pet shop :)

Just to add that Petshops mark up price of pups significantly. The pups sold are also of poor quality...not up to breed standards 'coz these are the left-overs from breeders.

Best to read the papers...Star's Classifieds has good list of breeders' adverts under PETS.

Personal experience..bought a Beagle from shop in PJ above RM2,000.00 (first time buying pedigree). Found out later breeders selling at only RM1,600 - RM1,800. My beagle is also not of breed standard. It was even mistaken by other beagle owners for a Basset Hound!!!

Lesson learned....research first then buy.

With all young puppies placed at close proximity in the Pets Shop is definitely killing. All puppies come from different location possibly carrying different type diseases meet at the Pet Shop.

Some Pets shop will say that their puppies has been viccinated once. Will one vaccination is good enoungh to protect the puppies against those killing diseases ?

No..you should check with the vet. My dogs had three visits to the vet to get complete vaccination.

Obviously those puppies on sale with only one vaccination is definitely prone to be infected with contagious diseases. The situation is more serious in Pet shop that has a lot of puppies in very congested area. This is where the trouble start.

Hi Laikamyee,

Whatever you do, avoid pet shops in the petaling street area. My hubby and I bought a pup there for RM 1300.00 and we had to put it to sleep 3 weeks later because it had caught the canine distemper virus while in the shop ( most probably).

The best one can do is to get a dog from a breeder. u can call MKA and ask them for the names and contact numbers of breeders who are having litters soon (depending on the type of pedigree u want).

Some breeders give you guarantees against hereditary diseases. ( i dont know about show disqualification guarantees), but it all depends on what you want your dog for.

I would never get a pup from a pet store anymore, because some fatal diseases are air borne ( like the flu virus), and some, like the parvovirus ( which is fatal for young puppies) can live for months on surface areas ( i read on one website the virus can live for years!). So if one puppy had it, you can bet the others have been exposed to teh same virus. I doubt that these pet shops wash their areas with chlorox at all.

Find a dog which has received its vaccination. Most breeders will do that at 6 weeks or so. A responsible breeder will keep his dogs for a few more days, or a week to observe the pup, as their tempreature goes up, and there can be side effects after the vaccination. And it would be stressful for the pup to change hands at that time.

Im not an expert at all, like some of the ppl yuo will come across here, but i had a tough first lesson to learn, and i dont' want anyone else to go through such heartbreak as watching a young puppy suffer.

so good luck to you, and remember to stay away from the pet shops !

So sweet of you on all those advices. Hopefully I don't have to go through those experiences you had.

I will try to contact MKA. Are they so kind to tell you the contacts of the breeders? Actually, I am looking for a Doberman or German Pointer puppies but it seems hard to find in Malaysia. I remember those days, Doberman was one of the famous breed in Malaysia but why not these days? Is it because the temperament of the dogs have changed or having some bad history? Everywhere I see Rotweiler, no doubt very handsome but he looks too fierce for a newcomer ( like me ) to handle and further more my kids are still very young. Maybe you can advise me.

No I didnt go back for a refund. (Petaling Street you know, I scared of parang wielding gangsters, even my taekwondo wont help me!! Crazy

) Besides the vet warned me about staring trouble with those folks in Pt Street too, so there is no one to blame but me Unsure

for being so ignorant and not researching BEFORE i bought the dog and not after!!

But they do allow a 24 hour exchange for another dog , which we didnt do, because our pup was vaccinated the day we bought it ( bad move) therefore when its blood was checked, the white blood cell count was high (which could be the result of the antibodies fighting the injected virus, or the antibodies fighting another virus)

in our case, it was the latter.

Sunday was a beautiful pup though Smile

and the joy she brought will forever be in our memories. She always sat on my feet when I was with her. But she also always bit my sisters ass when she bent down ! haha

Im looking forward to getting a golden or a lab from a breeder here, and since theyre very docile dogs, my hubby and I want a slighty more 'garang' 2nd dog ( once the first one is about 1 1/2 years old), and Im in love with the white shepards Wink

! hahaha

I am happy to learn that you have "study" through the White Shepherd breed and I am most willing to assist in everywhere I can.

However, based on your last post stated ... I want a slighty more 'garang' 2nd dog and Im in love with the white shepard! ... just like to remind you you that White Shepherd have being at least more than six generations genetic breeding to soften their temperament, which make them today ... an (almost) perfect companion dog. They can be a good watch dog but they are not good to be as guard dog like those who breed more onto performance.

There are currently two kennels in Germany that I know of, is working their way for Schutzhund title on their WS but not commonly can be found in USA, Canada & other Europe countries. In-fact, many of the WS breeder in Europe countries prefer to have their dog remain gentle ...

, but can a WS be as docile as a retriever? Ive seen the GSDs in the neighbourhood, and they actually bark at you when you walk by. However the retrievers just look and dont bother !! (in fact some wag their tails and come to the gate haha).

I actually want a dog that is standoffish and aloof (like the WS) with a soft temperant, easier to handle, since Im not very authorotative with dogs Unimpressed

, sayang them so much and they climb on my head and always get what they want! first i have to learn to be more 'garang' myself i think Wink

thats why i reaslie a GSD needs a strong leader. Maybe with a WS, I may be able to handle her better.

a question for you...the GSD is very versatile ( i.e they can be guard dogs, family companions, sniffer dogs etc ) hence they are very intelligent. Compared to a retriever, putting aside the temprement of the dogs, what is the difference in intelligence ? how do you determine intelligence (if there is a way?) I mean there are no IQ tests for dogs are there ?? Tongue

Breeders say that labs are smarter than goldens !! Frown

yorue asking me for advise ! Im very new to this too. I guess you have to decide what kind of dog you want, and whether the dog will meet your needs ( i.e watch dog, guard dog, family dog etc etc)

I read that certain dogs bind to the whole family and others bind to one person. And some dogs are not good with children!

Seems you want a guard dog from your choice. Maybe you should seek assistance from the experts like Leo Pui (on guard dogs - he will suggest the GSD haha Sly

) plus there are many postings on this site on all kinds of dog issues Smile

Toward your first paragraph ... Proper puppy socialization make good dog in time to come, WS can be friendly and they can be reserve too. Seven years with WS, I would say they make good WATCH dog ... they do bark and informed someone is coming ... and this include the regular visitor to your home (since they are not his/her owner).

To your second paragraph ... As mentioned, WS "were" breed to live as companion dog, MOST (check this out) of the WS are good temperament that you can easily handle them. Early Obedience is encourage!!!

Your third paragraph ... This is a tough "question"!!! I won't be able to tell you which breed is smarter. However, according to the reading I have learn before ... Border Collie is the smartest among the breed. The test was done based on 10 different lineage of each breed on Obedience Trial ... ended up GSD position at no 3 ... I couldn't remember off hand on other breed.

Labrador have being well known not only in hunting but they are also trained as detertor dog, eyes' seeing dog etc. With years of selection breeding programme, the breed have out-spoken for itself.

I am not familiar with Golden Retriver but I read from DogWorld Magazine years back that the United States have actually out-crossing the Lab & GR for eyes' seeing dog program and they have claimed that this "breed" is more easy to train when come to the pure breed among these two.

Labrador? Too sweet to look at and very common ( just my own opinion ). By the way, just got myself a puppy yesterday,....Dobermann, Red Rust, got him from one of the top breeders.

Will share with you guys more and need to tap some experiences as well.

Well, I've also came across the article that leopui was stating... Border Collie being smartest....The article could be from www.akc.org ..
If I recall correctly, Lab & Golden are in the top 6 also..
..and Chow Chow is almost tailing at the back of the list :)

It's good to hear that u got a doberman pup.
It's quite true that during the 'old days' ...(in the early 80's). ...we only seen doberman & GSD being the guard dogs... and not Rottis.. As I know, Rottis is the no. 1 (most registered) breed in M'sia now.

Good on you ... and to all the Rottie keeper, try to group up a charter or a breed club, then you should have better control and would produce a better Rottie (mind my word, I am not saying anything negative about the breed but I am looking forward to see more breed's club in Malaysia instead only GSD & Boxer that I know of at this time).

Thanks for the offer !! I went to see a Golden retriever litter yesterday and they were fabulous. HOwever, I want to wait until late June before I bring another pup home. Besides the pups for sale were only 5 weeks Shocked

!! so small .... i have my heart set on a golden at the moment,...can't wait to be a mommy! haha

was wondering if any people here had irish setters?

does anyone know if there is a difference in getting a pup froma female which is having her last litter ( i.e her 5 th litter ) as opposed to getting a pup from a female which is a first time mother ( about 2 yrs old)?

To All out there buying dogs. I was very disappointed when buying dogs from Petalling street in KL. My family bought a min. Pinscher from the shop without our anknowlegement. Within weeks the dog develop distemper and die. To make things worst we had 5 dogs at home, and unfortunately my sister SHih Tzu got infected and die soon after. So I am out to warn about buying dogs from that area.

The shop you mentioned is most popular and famous for Parvo & distempered dogs. All members are fully aware of it. Considered yourself lucky that you only died two dogs.
Should have checked with puppycom earlier.
I am just rather being nosey, about your remark -"Within weeks the dog develop distemper and die."- Can you remember if it is 2 weeks, 3 weeks or plenty weeks?

BTW, you registered yourself on April 3 and despite of that, your family is still patronising that shop? while puppies were dying left right and centre in that shop?

As a thumb of rule, the virus should be harmless in 3 to 4 weeks. Meanwhile, wash the area where the 2 dogs had died and visited with Glorox ( household bleach ) 10:1 .

10:1 is 10 parts water with 1 part chlorox or the other way round? sorry i'm blur.

wash means pour the solution and scrub?
after that must wash off with normal water or not?

Wow.. I think I'm lucky! Coz I visited the pet shop there a month ago and saw pug pups there.. I really tempted to buy already, just bcoz that they need to pay deposit for RM200.. I went home and thought about it everyday and nite.. And after that.. I found this website.. haha.. *phew*

Dear Uncle,

Do you still remember that I mention about my friend bought one dalmation from a dog farm? Guess what's happening now........ My pity friend's puppy is in dog's ICU for 5 days now.... yes, it is the distemper case... I asked her whether had she call the breeder and told him about this... well, she said she did but the breeder told her none of his dogs are sick... so, she dare not to ask the breeder more except to comfirmed whether her puppy had it first vacination... She told me that yesterday her puppy did stand up for awhile and the vet told her the chances now is 50-50. Today, she took a day off to clean her house with dettol and bleach... Frown

I hope her pup will make it through cos she love it very much.

hi Aruna,

10 parts water, and 1 part chlorox. I usually throw buckets of it around the place and let it soak into the floor for a half hour, and then its time to rinse off. Am very careful and rinse about 5 times after. I don't think I would use chlorox 2 weeks b4 the pup arrives. Scared of giving it skin problems with a too clean floor ! Laugh

I own a pedigree Lab puppy 1 year ago and it was put to sleep because of pavor virus, i get the puppy from a breeder, and the breeder told me to deworm and got for vacination. Well, i didn't do that and because i thought it was unnecessary. ( first timer and no experience, + no time).

After a yr, i get myself another puppy from a pet shop( where everybody in this forum is talking about- the petaling street one) is a english cocker spaniel. ( no cert provided, they said is a pedegree, no vacination, ask me to kao tim myself). shit....i only came across puppy.com.my 1 day after i bought the puppy.So, any advise for me. Pls forget about the cert from mka, how much i bought it and stuff like that. i m now worried about the health condition of the dog.(for the moment right now, the puppy seems to be happy and active) Any imediate advice for me to take care of the english cocker spaniel puppy. pls help ASAP.

How old is the puppy? Since he has not get any vaccination at all. Why not visit the vet nearest to your place and get vacination? Maybe you can ask for advice from the vet. You can ask the forumers though about available vets around.

Hope that your puppy will be fine off any illness!

Yes, Totally argeed on what joonkeet said. You better go to the nearer Vet and ask for the vaccination. I think is 3 vaccinations for Distemper + Parvovirus.. (1 month once, normally reach 4 months old is already completed the final). I went to the vet near to the Tesco at puchong for the 2nd injection for my pup is RM45.. the place is very clean.. :)

My puppy's 2nd vaccination costs me only RM35. The vet (Indian) is at SS14, Subang Jaya. He is due for final vaccination middle of July.

I brought my puppy to the vet the first day when I got him from a friend and it was a great relief when the vet announced his health and heartbeat (pugs are prone to heart problems) was excellent. The check-up only costs me RM14.

Yes, there are two rows of shoplots, the front row facing SS15 and the vet's clinic is just the row behind it.

The vet is very kind and friendly to both humans and animals. He is older so I guess he should have more experience than any younger vets. Smile

From my very recent experience of getting a new puppy (I just got SUnnie about 12 days ago). My advice is not to be too rush when you intend to get a puppy. Do enough research first, make sure you have enough time for specific breed of puppies. For example, my shih tzu takes up a lot more time and effort and patience than I've expected because soon I will need to work full time and I won't have time to attend to her that much (Shih tzu is very sensitive to skin problems, eye problems and etc.). And also check out more breeders before you decide on the puppy you want. I believe the health and physical buildup of the puppy is more important than the price. For me, I just went to two breeder and brought Sunnie home. Not saying SUnnie is not a nice dog but you know what I mean :-)

Just my two cents of thought :-) Happy puppy searching !

ALso, you have to consider your financial status when you get a pure breed. I had to spend a lot more than I thought after I got Sunnie. She eats and gets better treatment than her mummie ! Just this two weeks itself, I had to spend at least RM 400 ++ for her food, accesories, medical, etc. apart from the cost of getting her. I suppose the initial cost would be higher...but if you want to get a bigger breed (like Lab, German SHepard) or a big eater (eg. Schnauzer) then you will need to spend a decent amount of money on the dog food every month.

I think we should be a little more sparring to petshops...Not all petshop are irresponsible. Some are clean and nice. You see, breeders here get very little exposure to the market. Even after advertising on STAR classified for 2 months, the puppies might not be taken home. Pet shops actually provide a place that help breeders to show their beautiful puppies to the general public. The dog market is still at its initial stage and I don't even think that some potential puppy owners are aware of the. I must agree that they are many puppy mills and backyard breeders around. And I also agree that petshops are the meeting places for all our "viruses". But until we educate the general public about what the term "reputable breeders" means, then can we be able to stop all petshops from getting puppies from mills.

).Must be lots of work combing their long hair......but anyway what are the causes of distemper?Locked up too much?Stayed too long (weeks and months or years) in the cage or something....?

So,chlorox can kill germs?Never knew that.So it's err 10 parts water and 1 part chlorox???Can it like kill all the harmful germs present in a dog that has died's cage?Thanks. Wink

How do you know whether the breeder is trustworthy or not?
The pet shop I go in subang taipan is not bad. That's what I think. His dogs are very healthy and playful and active.

Yes, i think there's 3 pet shops in taipan itself. All of them are fine as i asked the vet in taipan, they are very choosy when selecting thier pups. And the one in SS2 is fine too coz i been recommanded by others. Besides that, you need some luck when owning a pet too i guess. Your furkid might be healthy when you buy them but things might change later on. Anything can happen.

I'm so sorry to hear about what happen. Well, for your info, most pet shops buy the dogs from supplier who are breeders. Many import from Thailand and Indonessia, sell at a very expensive price. We must becareful when we want to buy from pet shops. Firstly, we must be educated about the dog we want to buy. Then we compare it with other pet shop, not only the price of it, but we must observe the quality of the dog. Sly

Getting a dog is a big responsibility as you will be need to take care of him/her for the next 10-15 years. Dog being dog and they do not know what you want unless you train them. It is important to provide some basic training to your dog so that they will do some basic thing correctly such as pee and poo at the place that you want, do not jump on you when greeting you.......

Many ppl who bought or adopted dogs and did not spend minimal time to train them end up finally giving them up as they find their dog as nuisance. Training can be quite a challenge for some dogs unless you are very committed in doing so. Hence, think carefully whether you are able to spend a least a few hours with your dog before deciding in getting one.

Whether you can keep dogs in your apartment or condominium, you will have to check with the management committee of the condo. Most dog lovers will have no problem keeping small breed in condo and apartment.

By the way, if you wish to buy a dog, always consider buying it directly from the breeder.

I think most people do not think they have to do much to keep a pet. They think it is smooth sailing all the way and the pet will do just as they want it to. Now wake up! 1st you have to really want a dog and be sure you are able to keep it. I hate people who get something and when it is trouble to them they want to get rid of it. Having a pet is a lot of responsibility. We must teach our pets to live with us and try to get along together. If you work at it and learn how to enjoy your dogs company and enjoy caring for it, it will be the biggest joy in your life. But if you want some thing that will never do wrong and you do not have to go out of your way for then, buy a statue and stand it on your mantle piece.

I also would rather people adopt dogs than buy them. Why should we go and buy an expensive dog if all we want is a pet. It would be better to go to the animal shelter a few time and try to find a dog you really liked. You can also be proud of yourself for helping the poor dog and I am sure that it will repay you many times over. I often wish I was in K.L. so I could go and help with the dogs in the shelters there. Remember having a good relationship with our pets is a great joy.

I just want to share my experience with a Professional Breeder that I met in MKA.

About 3 weeks ago I went with my friend to MKA office b/c he needed to check out some information. While we were there, we saw a few breeders registering their puppies. Those, supposedly are professional breeder but if you look at them - SAD.. Their own up-keeping is very poor - very bad clothings, messy hair and nails... overall what I want to say is -- dirty & messy.

Out of curiousity I approached a lady and asked if I can look at the puppies photos in her little album. At first she sort of shouting at me 'NO'. Few minutes later, she passed me another album and said 'You can look at this one' - a bit unwillingly.

Well fine. I flipped through the photos. This is what I found.
1) This breeder raise at least 4-5 breeds of puppies
2) I notice the background of the photos where puppies were kept, it was dirty.

Well that BROKE MY HEART COMPLETELY when I link the owner's image + the photos, and this is what we call Professional Breeder ?????? And we are paying thousand bucks for the puppies ??? VERY SAD!

Well, do you really think all dogs that are MKA registered are considered good quality. I tell you NO. There is no system to check the breeder's background or their puppies history. As long as both bitch & stud are MKA registered, the puppies will automatically be recognised in MKA.

I am not saying all breeders are bad. I am sure there are many good ones out there! If you want to buy a puppy, it is best if you can visit the breeder and inspect (1)the breeder, (2)the area, (3)the pupies yourself before buying. Read up about the breed before your visit and don't be shy to ask breeder lots of questions to see how well he/she knows about the dogs. Dog lovers will be very passionate to answer your questions, look out for the sign Smile

. Or do like what bgkhoo said, adopt a puppy from the shelter. Why throw away thousand of hard-earned dollars to support those unProfessional breeders!

Well that is true for most cases. The fact is even if you purchase a dog with MKA certificate from a breeder , there is no guarantee that the dog that you purchased is pure breed. A friend of mine once purchased a Shih Tzu from a breeder in Sungaiway Village and when the puppy was young at 8 weeks, the pup look like a Shih Tzu. But when it grow older, they soon realize that the dog is not a pure Shih Tzu, a mixed breed. Many of such irresponsible breeder simply mate their dog and just use the registration details of one of the male dogs for registration of puppies. There is little economical ways to prove that these puppies is the decendants of this particular male. Hence, you have to be careful even if you buy from breeder.

i also bought a little spitz from the same pet shop and he die after 2 mths, they told me the puppy is ok when i go ask them why the puppy act weird. Now i dun trust pet shop any more and try looking puppy from breeders, but it's so hard to find proper one.

Me also suggest not buy the puppies from per shop (especially from that pet shop)

I heard that some claim to be pure breed could turn out to be mix breed. For example, the breeder have breed a shih tzu. The bitch only give birth to one puppy. On the hand, at the same there are a cross breed shih tzu is giving birth to several puppies. Because they want to gain profit, they claim that the pure breed shih tzu gave birth to three puppies.

This is unfair for the owner to buy a dog and turn out that is not a pure breed. This is irresponsible act.

I bought Billy from her during the Pet Expo. There were many other pet shops exhibiting there and they were selling some dogs which she has refused to sell for the breeders/owners.

I was chatting with her a few weeks after the Expo and she told to me of a couple of dogs which she has rejected but was sold by the other pet shops during the Expo. She took the time to explain the features of a couple of the pups which was too far out of the characteristics of their breed in her opinion.

I think you are misreading my messages. The petshop owner I went to only sells quality pups because she is responsible and wants to ensure her customers get value for their money instead of those prtshops in Petaling Street where the pups are not given the jabs and not in good condition !

Of course, the pups she is not selling should not be put to sleep. It is the responsibility of the pup owners to find these pups a good home. Maybe give them away for free or sell them at lower prices. Please read properly - no one says any pups should be put to sleep. A non pedigree dog makes as good a pet as a pedigree one. However, a mix breed should not be sold as a pure bred with a pure bred price because this is not ethical as many buyers are ignorant. More importantly, the pups sold must have their proper jabs and in good health to avoid the unfortunate incidents as those mentioned in this forum.

Hi!

If anyone is planning on buying a pup from a breeder, please, please, please buy from someone who is recomended to you by a reliable source (eg. a member of puppy.com?) and don't just go get one from any breeder advertising in the newspapers, etc.

Ah Kow was bought from a breeder who said she was a 3 month old puppy. The person who bought her didn't know a thing about Min Pins and believed the breeder. He paid RM 1300 for her, no cert. After I adopted her and took her to the vet for her jabs, I found out from the vet that she is actually about 2 years older than what we thought her age was!

So please be extra careful when buying a new dog and don't forget to do lots of research!

Agree,

i bought my pom from a breeder, without cert and around 1200 which was of Austarlian parents but when it has grown up, it's bigger and upon 2 washes, the legs which r supposed to be grey turned out to be white. but it is ok, cozzzzzzz as long as i love him it's ok. but a word of cautious ,,,beware of breeder too Smile

Responsible good breeders only sell themselves so they can make sure the pup has the best home. They would never sell through a pet shop. No good breeder sells to pet stores. All pet store pups are poor quality with no knowledge of the health background and will most likely have genetic health problems.

hi,

yeah, my cousin brother experienced the same thing. i heard it's common pet dogs in the pet shops. the vet said normally it's some kind of cough/fever virus which can be spread to another dog in a confined air-con room. one dog in that room got the virus, the rest kenah.

My cousin brother's G. Retriever (puppy) died when his whole lung was infected and was full of flam. the puppy was so cute...... Frown

... tat shops got is nex 2 (or having) other animals shops.... & do u know tat some animals waste is poisoning? Frown

e.g. birds (tey got alot over there), mice/hamster, hmmmm.... wat else i wonder..... Unsure

nex time u tot of getting a dogs, try 2 do some searching first.... if u really want 2 get from pet shop.... make sure tat shop only supply dogs.... or at least it should hav a really clean environment.... cosy...comfortable..... not smelly....& possibly wif aircond.. Smile

i'm sure when u were in tat petaling street shop, u should smell some terrible smell, mix-up from birds, cats, mice, hamster, iguana.... Frown

i never like tat shop anyway, i think she is torturing the animals..... Mad

i've own experience b4, my furkid gave birth 2 some pups last year, & sometime when tey r only 2weeks, a guy called us, asking 4 pups, got my phone from MKA.... Crazy

i just got a bit suspicious after asking some question (he want 2 buy all my pups at a petshop price).... so i ask 4 his address sothat i can take alook at his place... amazingly he agreed....got 2 his place 1 day.... & u know wat i saw!!! Mad

a few types of pups, pack in some small cage, inside a small room, an papan-atap house, very, very hot in the afternoon (even me got sweat), & only 1 standing fan was on... Mad

i feel like punching him tat time... Mad

tere r amer.cocker spaniel, shizhu, pincher, pug, chi hua-hua,.... all feeling hot... Mad

after giving him the high price i want 4 my pups, & no discount (he is quite disappointed).... we (my bf) just rush out and 'chaw' .....if i stay longer, i'm goin 2 smash his place.... tat house is in ampang village...& he is staying somewhere else.... Frown

All pet store pups are poor quality with no knowledge of the health background and will most likely have genetic health problems.

Need some correction here, i think its not fair to use the word 'all' but some. Not all pet shop sell poor quality puppy. They do have good breeder selling away puppies to pet shop. A good breeder doesnt mean he breed 100% good puppy.A good breeder just have the higher chances to breed and take care of the littles whenever they borned. Breeders sometime needs to offload thier little too and they sometime have no choice but to sell it to pet shop. Pet shop are willing to buy all the little at one time and so it just depends on luck and your experience when you getting a new pup. So good luck.

NO, NO GOOD breeder sells through a pet store. Good breeders ONLY sell themselves and want to know the buyers. They don't sell to just anyone. They care about where thier pups go. And they do the proper health screening and know the health issues in the close relative.

Actually, we should say no to puppy mills instead of pet shops cos if there's no puppy mills, there won't be so many unwanted and unhealthy dogs. I've known many ppl who sell dogs just for the sake of $$ and not considering all other circumstances.

Although so, I'm very glad to know a breeder.... whom I know for quite sometime already. Almost all my dogs are from him b'cos I believe him and he is very responsible. He'll do what's best for the dogs. He doesn't simply breed the way some ppl does... such as using unhealthy dogs or breeding mother with son or etc....

His price may be a bit high which can be negotiate but he's a breeder I can trust...

This is what we want, right?!

I just went to a web-site maintained by a PetShop in Jln Sultan (near PS Boutique). If I am not mistaken they are aware of this site. They have a new forum just like this (never saw it last time - few months ago). It looks like a rip off from puppy.com in layout - though much poorly maintained.

A move to counter the negative comments against PetShops in that area? Wink

Anyway, I regret to say I bought my dog from them. Didn't know then it wasn't right. But there is this other question. If we don't buy from these PetShops what would they do to those puppies they can't sell?

Don't worry that petshops are going to suddenly start dumping puppies at the SPCA, PAWS or the marketplace ... Smile

Petshops are not going to lose money that way ... and educating people to stop buying from petshops isn't going to happen overnight ...

Ideally, it is supposed to work this way ... Smile

... if forums such as this - succeed in teaching people why it's not good (or sometimes even dangerous) to buy puppies from petshops ... then the unscrupulous pet shops will find it harder and harder to sell poorly bred puppies to unsuspecting customers ... when that happens, puppy mills and irresponsible breeders will lose their main retail outlets and be put out of business ... Hopefully, this ripple effect will drive away all those people who only breed to make money but don't really care about dogs ... and then only good responsible breeders will be left ...

I absolutely agree! Spread the word, do not buy from Pet Shops, you will be encouraging puppy mills to run for profits. Visit this website, it will make people who breed indiscriminately and buy from pet shop think twice. Circulate it wide if you will. I cry when I see it and even my 8 yr old daughter cried for those abandoned and homeless animals. Speaking of puppy mills- does not the or some AUTHORITY in KL have some authority in SHUTTING down puppy mills? The whole point of puppy mills is to get profit at a dog's life.

Getting a pup from a legal breeder is all nice and sunny- but how many pups in pet shops@pup mills have to suffer cos we all just tell each other NOT to go to this and that pet shop? Unsure

just wanted to add in - i'm a breeder, i breed for show, and always ensure my pups go to good homes. there has been numerous times when my dad and i actually bought the pups backat a loss, when we find out the owners are mistreating it.

Indeed, Puppymills and ill-runned petshops are a bane..MKA cant do anythng to the puppymills because they're complying to the rules of MKA. besides, how do we classify the term 'mill'? there was a time when two of my bitches got pregnant, each with 10 pups!! having 20 pups and little sleep didnt make me a mill-owner. *grin* its up to the authorities (note - not MKA) to discover if owners aremistreating their dogs..so if you come across any shabby place, report it to the SPCA..hopefully soemthing will be done.

seeing the reply from your post, here is my 2 cent worth.

Having known that the rules is not good enough to deter the puppy mills and the is not doing anything about it then they are indirectly giving the puppy mills a helping hand.

By toeing the line, they - the puppymills gets to do what they want then what is the rules for ? looking nice in the books ?

Having 2 big bitches giving birth to 10 puppies and having 10 bitches who is giving birth to 20 puppies is 2 different stories. You have to get the clear.

In only HOPING something to be done by SPCA we might as well do something ourselves to deter this kind of things from happening. As everyone knows SPCA have limited resources. If everyone keep on only HOPING then I guess we'll all end up in Dreamland.

I hope you are not getting offended by me being frank here. Just my humble point of view.

how do we define it? Well, breeders who breed their bitches season after season. Not treating their dogs decently. Not giving them proper care. Caging them up 24/7..till their paws are bleeding.These dogs are not groomed and smell disgusting. Their teeth are so bad they rot at a young age. No love or attention whatsoever except for breeding time and feeding. guys..anymore to add?

No doubt MKA can't do anything at the moment and it would take a huge effort and quite a sum of money if they were to set a rule on the well-being of the dogs and check from time to time...

For now.....not sure if SPCA does anything abt backyard breeders.. Frown

yep you're..but i think if we report it, its better than nothing, right? besides,anyone remembers the malay mail coverage on the mistreated GSD? hopefully by highlighting, more people will be aware of it as well. perhaps with coverage, including that of MKA's opinions/contacts in it, people will be more aware of their options when it comes to buying a dog, and not just buy it from any tom,dick,or harry petshop/puppymill.

MINGLMY: oh no, not offended at all. :) you're right in many areas, but as i said, reporting and hoping,is better than hoping alone! yes you're right about the bitches giving birth.. its bad to breed a bitch non-stop, she should always be rested after each litter for one season.. sigh. but whattudu, these are the people who enter the dog world for profit's sake, and nothing else.

Nah...

Hazel(dobe) was a rescued doggie..she has skin problems and permanent scars. She has a nice bloodine but..conformation not too good(too small). As for Kaizer(GSP) he's also rescued..we're fostering him...I hv to prove to dad that he is well behaved..I hv an important exam coming up in abt 9 days..so not much time to train him. He's learnt most of the hse rules and "sit".He's 6 mths old..but was caged up for 4mths.. As for my bullmastiff... he's conformation not good. He might hv the build..but muzzle's too long. And for Silky..she's a cocker mixed terrier. Smile

There is also people who breed their own pet in order to sell their pups for money without knowing the health of the dog. This is so sad. I have friends who got/bought pups which got genetic diseases and its so sad to hear that this kind of genetic diseases can never be cured and the dog have to suffer through out his/her life due to some people's greed. This is what makes me angry...

If you are the one who is at the receiving end n got the pup I'm sure you would agree with what I have said too

I beg to differ. Not every petshop selling pups from puppy mills ler. There are many people who breed their dogs and then bring to the petshop to sell it. I bought one of my dog from a petshop in ss2 and he grew up to be rather YOUNGnDANGEROUS and some more FIERCE like LION. For me, as long as the pup is healthy and does not have any physical defects and most importantly have a good temperent, I think enuf liao. A Dog is still a Dog where ever you buy it.

Then somebody posted about QUALITY DOGS get from the Star Classifieds. Well, again, I disagree. NOT all those advertisers are good breeders. heck some are not even breeders but just dog brokers. I bought my min pin from a broker in the star classifieds. Well, he is thin like pencil. Bought him from the reputable newspapers though Crazy

Well, wad can I say? It's Simply a dog eat dog world and I type very long cos I'm on leave today Sly

I'm a new member reading this forum because i would like to buy a Golden Retriever soon.I'm staying in Kajang and there's no pet store or breeders in that area.I've been going to Pets wonderland and The pet safari in Ikano to have a look.I was even introduce to go to a store in Sri Petaling called pet square. if u got money, then u can get from lor, he is in PJ. if not then u call up MKA and get a list of GR breeders. find also in star newspapers. also try the adoption forum here and see if anyone is giving away any dogs though most would be adult dogs. try also check out SPCA & PAWS. sometimes they do have pure breds there.

well good market mah..try getting from malacca or penang, they are cheaper but make sure the temperament is good and as what u read in books k. normally they sell about RM1200. i think bestoc kennels in penang sell at RM1200 and today i saw newspaper someone selling GR puppies 6 weeks.

Cheap did't mean Good. Usually GR price is 2K above.

If you find a GR breeder that sell cheap GR. Make sure the GR parent and the puppies are free of CHD or any kind of sickness ya

What if the price is right but the pup is not.

If she bring the pup to you it's mean no matter what the pup look like you also have to accept it.

me myself also is a dog lover..lately i'm looking for a miniature schnauzer. i been looking in many pet shop. but there is 1 that offer me RM 850 for a 2 month puppies with MKA cert. is it save for me 2 buy it? beside this, there is a breeder offer me rm 1200 for a champion line 1. actually is it champian line will cause the cost increase so high? is the normal 6 week puppies can't stand still on the 2 back leg?

If can don't buy from petshop u will never know what is the condition of the dog try look in The Star newspaper u'll find it, go for home breed at least you can see how the parents look like.

8 weeks is the best to pickup those puppies not 6 week, champoin line don't mean is good try to ask for RM1000 i got mine for that price also champion line.

Hi patkris,

Do take the advise of kenken and just to add to this, do find out by reading more about the breed from books which are plentiful in the market. If you intend to show it be meticulous when choosing a pup. If you wish for just obedience trial, then you need not get a good looker but a steady and good temperament trusting pup. "A champion line" if it is the breeder should be able to stand the pup as it is very likely in born into them. Have fun and if you need more hints do let me know as I am sure other members will gladly give their advise. Just remember take your time about it.

Hi,

If you are looking for MS depend on what is the criteria. If you are thinking of going for show you might want to have a champ line puppy. If just for pet just a normal MS that is healthy is good. Normally puppy will stand on their feet when around 5 weeks old. If 6 weeks but still can't stand properly could be the leg got problem. As for the price sometimes RM1200 is not expensive depend on the quality. Good quality MS can cost up to RM5000 or more. Again this depend on criteria you are looking for.

I heard that some claim to be pure breed could turn out to be mix breed. For example, the breeder have breed a shih tzu. The bitch only give birth to one puppy. On the hand, at the same there are a cross breed shih tzu is giving birth to several puppies. Because they want to gain profit, they claim that the pure breed shih tzu gave birth to three puppies.

This is unfair for the owner to buy a dog and turn out that is not a pure breed. This is irresponsible act.

Oh geez.., this is juz so awful... Then how can v b sure tht it's pure breed n v r payin d reasonable price v should? It's hard 2 knw wen they r juz a small puppy... How can sum ppl b so dishonest all bcoz of $$$..???

Although so, I'm very glad to know a breeder.... whom I know for quite sometime already. Almost all my dogs are from him b'cos I believe him and he is very responsible. He'll do what's best for the dogs. He doesn't simply breed the way some ppl does... such as using unhealthy dogs or breeding mother with son or etc....

His price may be a bit high which can be negotiate but he's a breeder I can trust...

This is what we want, right?!

Yes, I m very serious about gettin a shih tzu. Been 1ted 2 get 1 since end of last yr, but I think I need sum time 2 learn n thoroughly research on how 2 take care of d puppy as I nvr had any pets b4... So now, this is d best time 4 me 2 hav 1 since I'm on hols n can giv my puppy ful attention... Wink

Double agreed [research B4 buying] and if U really want to buy puppy from pet shop U have to few pet shops B4 U buy the puppy.

I've been tipu by one of the pet shop in SS2 PJ also [beside Italian restaurant], when I brought my puppy from this shop they offer a "free full set of grooming" without time limit.

From time to time when I went back to this pet shop to buy dog biscults I also double checked with them and they confirmed is no time limit at all. So...6months later I bring my dog back to this pet shop for this "free full set grooming" end up they told me I have to pay RM60 for this "free full set grooming" cos my dog's size is big already, then I told them that I've been told is without time limit and U know what they said to me, they said 'usually the dog owner will bring the dog back for this "free full set grooming" within 1 month after they purchased the dog, yours one already 6 months old so we need to charge U RM60" I was so angry, so I just pick up my dog and walk out this pet shop and never went back to this pet shop again. No point for free grooming if need to pay right?!

hi,

I am a home breeder of english cocker spaniels. The best way to get info on breeders is to go to MKA office/contact MKA for breeder info as breeders need to register the kennel name, address, contact no with MKA for each litter.
