Re: [jase2020] CHIHUAHUA-PP LOOKING FOR FREN [In reply to] Can't Post

i can't join the trip as my best friend is wedding on the same day....already booked!!

what about the malaysia responsible dog owner held on 11 sept? If nothing, most likely will be there loh...as usual

so happy to meet you yesterday...my pp & tt still like that loh...never grow fatter nor thiner but I feel like if they don't have appetite to eat right, they will slim down very fast, faster than growing fat loh...

didn't continue for the class this semester, will do so may be in oct or so...still thinking whether to continue pp or register tt as I have spent less training time with tt...unfair right!!!

Hi, yst 323! Rr suggested (in a different thread) that I have a look at this thread, and Mingly suggested that I write to you if I have any questions regarding Chihuahua's. Smile Anyhow, by way of introduction, I have a 22 week old short haired female Chi pup and was worried that she wasn't eating / growing as much as I'd like (I would like her to be a giant amongst Chis, as I've read that the larger they are, the more sound they are health-wise). Looking thru' part of the previous posts in this thread, I am not as concerned now, n think that she is, comparatively, doing well, as she was 1.84kg at 19 weeks old (with t-shirt n collar on, but those don't weigh much, I don't think). Have been trying to feed her 4 times a day, but she hasn't been too co-operative!! Tongue

Incidentally, I think your Chi n mine may perhaps be related!! My friend who gave her to me got her from Loong the breeder too!! Smile

I have some comments on 2 things which I read in the messages posted here, FYI (hope u don't mind)..:

1. A dog who is in the 'sit' position who uses his front paw to propel his back legs / bum along the ground is doing something called 'scooting'. Dogs do this when they have impacted anal sacs - all dogs have such sacs just inside their rectum which secrete a not-too-pleasantly-scented liquid which is usually expressed when the dog poops. If however the poop isn't hard/firm enough or for any reason the sacs are not voided, they can become impacted and cause the dog some discomfort (and in some instances, may cause them to have b.o.). A vet will be able to express the sac and remove the liquid. My Chi has exhibited such behaviour too a couple of times, and the vet resolved the problem. I won't go into detail here about the process (which was really rather quick). Tongue

2. Chihuahuas are known to shiver / tremble when they are excited, nervous, stressed, frightened or cold, so take your pick! Smile

Anyhow, t'would be great to 'talk Chi' with you, so I hope you read this msg! Smile

YHL

Hi,

Welcome to chi family...

Thanks for sharing your information with me...appreciate that!Smile

I personally don't like too small size chi, like tea cup size nor giant size. Too small, like you said more vulnerable and easily have respiratory problem or even trachea collapse when they grow older. Over size will cause knee cap problem as their legs basically are too small to hold their body weight. Your chi is having 1.84 kg in 4-5mths old...how heavy she is now?

Both my chis are maintaining at 1.8-1.9kg all this while..not purposely control their diet but they are like that no matter how I feed them. btw, i only feed them twice a day as I'm a working lady, not afford to feed them 4 times a day.

Re: [yst323] CHIHUAHUA-PP LOOKING FOR FREN [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey, there is an article in the toy dogs forum about the myth of the teacup chihuahua, if you haven't seen it. Smile The vet also told me that some of the dogs are so teensy coz food is withheld from them when they are young (if 2 dogs in a show are equally good, then all things being equal, the more dimunitive Chi will win) - they are not starved per se, I don't think, just not given as much as they should be when they are pups. That's not right, I don't think. My view is that all pups should be given as much dog food as they are willing to eat so that they may achieve their own, personal, genetic growth potential. To me, it's more that than a matter of preferring them to be or to conform to a particular size for their breed. I don't mean lah that they should be fed so much that they become overweight! Smile Vet also commented that if my Chi grows too big, then she won't look like a Chihuahua! I don't really care about that; just want her to be happy, healthy n achieve her maximum growth potential - genetics will determine how large (size wise) she eventually ends up, I guess!!

I must confess that I am a bit obssessed about the health aspect (n believe that proper care n meeting a dog's dietary requirements are part of the building blocks for a long n healthy life), becoz my MinPin (see pic on left) died 17 weeks ago today when she was barely 3.5 years old, from chronic liver failure - the vets reckon, after the postmortem, that t'was most likely due to a congenital defect. I know that these things are nigh impossible to detect, but still can't help being a bit paranoid.. Tongue

Re my Chi's (her name's Tasha) current weight, dunno.. My home scales are not sensitive enuf!! Tongue Guess we'll have to pop by the vets at some point just to weigh her.. How old are your Chis now, BTW? I assume that they are adults now, based on the date of your first post.

My 4 times a day comment was only in respect of growing pups lah! Smile Re feeding pups, I've found that different people/books advocate different things. Some say up to 4 times a day, some say several small meals throughout the day, some say free-feeding. I'm working too, so at the mo, she is fed in the morning, then I leave some food out for her coz I'm at work the whole day (she doesn't eat much of this), then when I return from work, I sit with her n try to ensure that she eats a decent amount, then again 4 hours later. When she's older / an adult n doesn't need as much food, I'll feed her twice a day too - once each morning n night. Vet says that twice a day is actually preferable to once - from a gastric / digestive aspect.. Smile But even then, I'll still leave some dog food out in a bowl (I did the same thing for my MinPin n she never touched that, but ate when I sat with her - I know this isn't good, from a training aspect, n that I spoilt her..), coz m worried that she'll be hungry if I'm home late from work, or that something (touch wood!) may happen to me n my family may be unable to get to her quickly enough - just don't like the thought of my dog being hungry and having no food when she wants it! Tongue

Was originally concerned coz I looked at the feeding chart at the side of the dog food bag, n it says that puppies of x weight should be fed y amount of food per day, n I weighed the amount which Tasha should be eating (based on her weight at that time), n found that she wasn't eating as much as suggested! Vet said tho' that one can't really follow the said chart coz it's general n meant to apply to different breeds anyhow, n assured me that Tasha's weight n general health are fine (phew!). Was still curious tho' to find out how much other Chi pups are eating n what their weight was at around the same age. Smile

HLYap

Totally agree with u we shouldnt stuff our dogs juz wishing them to be small size! But it also doesnt mean over fed them. For me, I will feed them 3 times a day when they were puppy, then slowly reduce to 2 times, when they are already an adult, they can be adjusted to 1 time perday. At my hometown my house got some chihuahuas too, they are very intelligent & funny.Smile

Not concerned about Tasha's size / growth rate anymore. Smile We met a short haired 1 year old female Chi (who came from the same breeder - was told that he's apparently the VP of the) this past Sat, and Tasha's taller than her! I think my dog's a bit alpha too.. Tongue she has seemed quite dominant when playing with the 2 other Chis she's met so far.. Or maybe the ones she's met are just a little shy.. Smile Hope it's not coz she is a hyperactive, 'chor lor' (Hokkien for rough) little pooch with no sense of self-preservation who has been lucky so far!! Ack.

Hi,

I have 2 chis now, one male and one female...I don't think is right time to get another chi as yours is pretty young which still need your full concentration. I have my second one when the first one was 8-9 mths.. I foung it difficult to train both at the same time... if you think you manage to train and take care both at the same time, then is up to you, ya!!Tongue

I stay in cheras...always wanted to organise a chihuahua gathering but have no time to do it... hope we can have one in the near future...

Hi,

I think ur dog skin problem only on neck area maybe is due to collar or leash. Try not to wear it all the time.

If ur dog is allergy to Shampoo or Dog food ur dog would not only lost hair around the neck area but whole body. Personally my experince on human shampoo & conditioner is definitely better than dog shampoo & conditioner. Feeding Novacote would not help ur dog to grow back the hair. It only help to maintain and promote soft & shinny hair that all.

Hi Chris,

I already stop wearing him the collar since last week. go to vet n check tht he in good condition. the body also started become lesser, maybe puppy change coat, i use alpo puppies before that, n i scratch him on his neck area, a lot of shampoo also i use on him, so i think he allergy to this thing. well i shower him yesterday night with bio-groom puppies, very nice smell, i like it. do u have any idea on any supplement can help hair grow??? how about the original olive oil (bertolli) to apply on the skin, as i know for human it work well on dry skin...
