Super Dog Lover here! Can't Post

Hi~ I'm really excited about this site!
This is such a great palce to share among all dog lovers...really impressed!

I'm keep a male Golden Retriever, 18mths old now.
As I'm studying in US, he is my EVERYTHING. But what I'm most worrying now is HOW to bring him back to M'sia??? Somehow, I've surveyed a little from the airlines, but still very doubtful and confused by the procedures and regulations, especially about the quarantine.
Anyone kind enough to give me some helps here?!

Hi ,

The quarantine period for dogs from USA is one week at the KLIA quarantine station. To bring the dog into Malaysia, you will need to apply for import permit.

I know the quarantine time in KLIA is one week.
and what i learned from web is, there's a need of another ONE WEEK quaratine in LAX before depart, is it true for MAS?
About the import permit, i know nothing about it.
should i get it in US or from M'sia? how long should i apply it prior to schedule?
If I plan to have my dog travel on 3rd January, do you think i can hit the time-line for all the procedures? if it's too rush, then i rather plan WELL with longer time.

Import permit need to be applied in Malaysia. As for the time, you still got plenty of time if your dog is travelling on Jan 3rd.

Re: [Khoobg] Super Dog Lover here! [In reply to] Can't Post

Is there any "expiration" for the permit?

For example, for US domestic pet traveling, I need to get the health cert from the vet in 10 days most, and inform the airlines just 24 hours in advance (depends on weather).

If i apply the import permit, how long would it valid?
as I know, i have to inform the airline for international flight at least one month prior to the departure date. But i'm not so sure about MAS policy on this matter.
I'm really confused now.... for all these procedure, which should be done first and which next.Unsure

Import permit applied will have a validity period of one month. Hence you will have to apply it at appropriate time.

say, who to call, where to get the forms, or, can I do it online? can i have someone in M'sia toapply it on behalf of me?
My dog is AKC registered, does it help for "smooth" procedures?
what documents I need for application?
How much is it?

If there's an official web with the informations I need, PLEASE let me know.

Thanks for the infomation, it really helps!
I just scanned tru the site, I'll print them out and read tru carefully later. (quite busy these daysMad)

I would like to know:
What is the main purpose of the import permit?
Is it mainly for entry? or for quarantine? or when pick up the pet?
I learned that I can ask someone in M'sia to apply the permit on behalf of me. If so, when is the permit really IN NEED? upon landing in KLIA? or just show the officer for pick-up purpose?

You need the permit for entry purposed. YOu will need to present the original copy of the permit to the VET department in KLIA where they will stamp and sign to confirm that your dog is allowed to enter. From there, the airline will issue you the DO that you need to present for the collection of your dog from the Animal Hotel.

Cheers

Hi ,

Sorry, I cannot answer your queries rdging what is the purpose of an import permit. May I suggest you do a search on any major search engines using phrases like "import dogs to Malaysia". This is how I came across the Vet.Services Dept of Malaysia using the Yahoo search engine.Smile

May I also suggest you might try to ask the Malaysia Kennel Association for some guidelines. They are on the web as .

Wishing you every success in your quest.

Apply it at the counter and wait for about 30 minutes and you will get your import permit. As for clearance, you can always appoint agent if you wish.

As for the agent to handle your dog from LAX to KL, I do not know whether there is any. You will have to check from US side. The local agents will only help you to clear the dog locally and arrange your dog to the quarantine station.

For dogs that is coming to Malaysia from USA, you will have to meet local requirement such as import permit, health certificate and one week quarantine in KLIA. As for dog leaving USA, you will have to check with US side. I am not aware of the need to quarantine the dog in USA for one week before leaving US soil.

Yes, you will have to send your dog to your VET (government VET is even better) for a complete check and Rabies vaccination and get them to issue you a health certificate to certify that your dog has a clean bill of health. With this and import permit, you should not have any problem of gaining entry into Malaysia.

Re: [mackmack] Super Dog Lover here! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

Welcome to the forum. My brother is in Boston working and recently had a friend who brought a dog back to Johor. This si what my brother told me but am not too sure. First, you have to make sure that all the vaccinations are in order. Check with your vet if you require any special (additional) vaccinations to enter Malaysia. Then you have to proceed to apply for an export permit. Once you have that, keep the original with you. Apply with the airline when you buy your ticket for an animal crate. Get the largest one so that there is enough space. Oh yes, have stopovers on your trip and check with the airline if you are allowed to check your dog out for water. My brother's friend stopped over in London and he was allowed to do that. Then when you arrive in KLIA, your dog will immediately be transported to the quarantine centre and you can meet him there. It's actually after the Sepang circuit. He will be quarantined for about a week and after that you can take him home but he must still remain quorantined for a further 3 weeks (I think). While the dog is at the quarantine centre, you must make arrangements to feed him daily. It is not an automatic request, so, please remember this. I heard that the place is rather poorly kept and animals not treated too well. Oh yes, you might want to consider sedating your dog for the journey otherwise, your dog may get sick and restless. Remember not to feed for 24 hours prior to flight time.

Hope this helps. My brother did mention that any vet could give you some guidance.

Valery

Thank You Sooooo Much, Valery!!
I have my dog fully vaccinated, rabbies etc.
>>Check with your vet if you require any special (additional) vaccinations to enter Malaysia.

I've asked the vet once, but he said they will do whatever the M'sia side request. He asked if i could get a list of import requirement so that he could just give the proper vaccination or whatever inspection is needed coz every country has different policy.

I guess the friend of your brother took MAS from NY right? Is there any possible chance that I could contact this person, like email or msn?
Do you mean i also have to get a permit BEFORE i leave US? For the request of crate, is it come along with the cargo charges or it's extra charge. Coz i do have a crate but it might not BIG enough for him to turn around, maybe just fit-to-lay down.

Sorry but my brother's friend is honeymooning somewhere in South Africa this very moment and won't be back until after Chinese New Year. In Malaysia, we laso need to apply for an export permit. Basically this permit only proves that the government veterinary department has seen your dog and verifies that the vaccinations are in order. I've done export but not an import yet (Labrador). As far as I know, when I was arranging the export, you are only allowed to use the airline standard crates (different sizes) but I also got to know that different airlines have differrent rules, so please check with the airline you're gonna travel with. I know that AC and LH are more lenient. My brother's friend actually took MH from Boston-London-Singapore-KL (breaking in London and Singapore). Not an easy task but definitely rewarding to have your little furry friend at your side after all the trouble ! Whatever you do, please check properly (don't be hasty) and always call and call the airline b4 departure to ensure that your crate is ready and where you should collect and load. When are you planning to return by the way ?

I plan to have my housemate bring Mack home on Jan 3. My housemate has bought his ticket, MAS, from LA to KLIA, one stop at Taipei.
I migh travel from Michigan to LA with them if I could get the ticket of same flight. At first, I thought Mack need to be quarantine in LAX for one week time.... and about the crate, i just thought if i provide myself then i won't be charged extra for that. Anyway, the most important thing is have him back SAFELY and troubles-free.

So, sum up all the above suggestions and comments, I think i need:
1. call the airline for details.
2. request crate
3. once confirm to have him on flight, then get the export/import permit.
4. health cert from vet, and vaccinaion if needed.
5. keep calling both parties in KL and LA
Right?
did i miss out anything important procedures?

FYI [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi all~!
I've called the MAS passanger reservation service in LA. Everythings sounds very simple!Smile
What I need upon departure would be the "import-permit" and "health certificate" (7 days validation)by any local vet.
The cage/crate limitations are not more than 150-inches of length+width+height measurement, and not more than 100-pounds of pet+crate. No quarantince needed before departure. Just need to reconfirm with MAS again before the flight schedule, say one day is okay too.
The charges will be the extra charge of 2 baggage.
2x $109 = $218 (no other miscellenuous charge). However, if have a few pounds over weight, they may still allow the check-in or they'll charge some extra based on theover-weight/size units.

I am very happy to gather the info and the receptionists are very helpful and sincere.

BUT,
(yes, there's always a "but" if things get too smooth...)Mad
I just went to the airport, which is a very very small aiport in this town, smaller than Pudu Raya......
of course, you guys could imagine which kind of plane i could take here....... those 2 rows with 2 seats on each rows.
Guess what?! Northwest categorize pets into 5 groups, small, medium, large, extra large and giant.
The airport here doesn't carry any pet that is "large" or above "large" category, and my golden is 88 pounds which consider an Extra Large Breed.Frown
I can't have Mack depart from thsi town.
My alternate option now is,
in order to let my friend to bring Mack home on Jan 3, we might have to rent a car and travel to another city from here, say Minneapolis, stayed over night, then depart from the there, cos my friend will transit at there too. But instead of transitting there, we have to drive to there and depert/check-in from there. Wasted one journey of the flight.

Ooooo........ and i'ms till not sure about the charges of Northwest pet Carrier service.

Oh yeah! one more thing: for MAS, crates are not provided byt he airlines, can't even rent one. So, i have to buy a new one for Mack. I do have one 40"x27"x30" Petmate Plastic crate, but it could just fit him right, not flexible enough to turn and stand still. i'm noe having problem toget an affordable crate. most of them are around USD$130.

Anyway, just wish to share with u guys about what I've jsut learned today.

i will keep survey on the info.

hope this thread could also help those who's facing the same problem as I do.

FYI [In reply to] Can't Post

Okay.... I've called the Northwest Pet traveling service.
Frown
I can't put him on the board from this SMALL town.
FINE, I still have another option, which i'll goto the transit airport in Minneapolis by CAR, and wait for my friend to reach there by AIR. Then have my dog check in there.
Cross my fingers~ the temperature along the whole journey has to be above 10F.
My crate size 40x27x30 would be the maximum allowable crate size for 757. Mack could just fit into it. He can lay down and sleep, but not have his head straight up, not to mention to change his sleeping posture.Unsure
Anyway, at least he could still fit in the MAX. crate size. Hope he'll stay calm along the whole journey.

When he reach LA, has to wait 2 hours to check him out from the domestic flight, then bring him over to the international terminal and re-check-in to MAS counter.

Now, I'm very confusing.
Should I send him back now with my friend?

Or, should I travel him with me to LA, spend about half year there, then bring him back to KL via Japan Airlines??

Anyone could "vote" for me?Crazy

Training [In reply to] Can't Post

I've decided to let mack travel on 3 Jan with two of my housemates and ME!
Hope it's not too late to get a ticket during the peak holidays season.

Right now, I'm training him to stay in the crate.
i spent 5 hours to train him just to get into the crate, sit, lay down, and stay, without the "gate". Needs Lots of Lots of patient! and encouragement.

Now, he has no problem to get into the crate and seems like he's quite enjoying having his own Kingdom, with all his toys in it and no one could beat him inside.

Later, I'll try to move around the crate to different outdoor spots to train him.

HI ,

Hope you get your golden back to Malaysia fine... it usually turns out ok. Have never imported dogs, but have imported horses before, and although really hassly while you're dealing with all the import-export licenses etc, it's really worthwhile in the end! We imported horses from the UK during the Foot and Mouth scare period, so had extra probs to deal with with the Ministry of Agri over here.

Anyway, good to meet another golden lover... we just got ourselves a golden pup last week, 2 months old called BRINKLEY! Are you from KL?

When my boss brought his Lab in from Canada, I remember that I had to contact a forwarder to clear customs and send to quarantine centre. Can anyone in the forum help out. I remember asking a pet shop to recommend the forwarder they use to clear their imported animals. I also arranged that this person feed Channel everyday. Unfortunately she feel while in quarantine and hurt her legs that needed lengthy treatment and she went home flea infested. That is why, I really recommend that you take the time to visit her everyday at the quarantine centre and feed her yourself. At least then, you can control the situation and try to get close to the vet there. He's the one who would be able to release our dog eary if he decides to. Seems like everything is ready and you're all set to come back. Some trouble no doubt but we all learn about what we have to do to get all these things done. Good luck...

Valery.

P/S : When you're dealing with airlines, always check and double check just in case the first person was not sure but "just thought" kinda thing. Because if someone screws up, it will cost you a bomb !!!

Valery, Thanks!

I'm very concern about the environment of the quarantine area. I've asked my friend (he lives near KLIA, jsut 15 min drive, he's bringing my dog back with him this 3 Jan) to arrange the "daily feeding time" withthe center upon arrival. I will make sure he does call tot he center everyday to check my dog's situation and also to feed him personally in the center. From what I learned here, I've told him to keep asking questions and show the officers the concerns on Mack so that they won't "main-main" to my dog. hope this is the right trick.

I've also called to the airlines and repeated the same questions to make sure i would get the same information.

I will also have my family help me to get the import permit and send the real copy to me. But it's still a bit earlier to get the permit now due to its validation.

Anyway, I feel much better now to plan things ahead. Really gained a lot of info and helpful hints from you guys. Truely appreciated.

Hi Mach,

You need to keep the original import permit in Malaysia for clearance when your GR arrive. Get your family to fax you or email you a copy so that you can make your arrangement on US side. Most airline will accept fax or email copy for documentation.

As for quarantine, it is better to bring your own food so that Mach can continue with the food he is familiar with. You are allow to make physical visit to your dog anytime between 8:30am to 4:30pm.

Khoobg,

To clarify,
I would like to have all the original copies of permit/health cert/vaccination history etc. to be with Mack all the time from US back to KL. I mean.... (I think) I will have everything documented (in a folder), and I'll prepare sufficient food/treats/toys everything in a bag (like those infant pampers bagWink), and my friend will carry the bag with him ALL the time. So whenever there's need to check out Mack during transit, Mack's flavorite toys and treats could get him in & out the crate easily. Also, whenever a document or info is needed, my friend will have it on hand anytime to show.

Do you think this is a good idea?

I will definitely have my friend or someone to feed Mack everyday during the quarantine period. i can't stand without someone i know to keep an eye on Mack when I'm not with him.
Also, it is not expensive to call from US to M'sia.
i think I will call them personanlly everyday even it's jsut to check if the stool is okay.

Science Diet dog food is easily available in Malaysia and you can get it from most pet shop.

As for the documentation, as long as your friend is arriving at the same time as your GR and he is making the clearance on your behalf, then it should be fine.

Hi, the quarantine for dogs is the same place as the quarantine for horses, and from my experience, if you get to know the people there (vet in charge and also the staff taking care of the animals from day to day) they look after your animal pretty well. But a good idea to get your friend to check on your dog daily if poss, coz if they know you come to check, they take care of your dog better. You could also get your friend to walkyour dog personally when he is there, just in case the handler there doesn't walk him enough during his stay in quarantine.

have the water frozen in the bowl, so it won't split everywhere and melt slowly. Don't prepare "normal" dog food, but bigger treats that won't split everywhere out from the bowl and it won't mess the crate.

when i read tru the DVS website, I found the info about quarantive charges is veru blur to me. It stated once that the quarantine charge will be RM4 per day, but at another page it stated that the quarantine fees would be RM79 (as total). and when i read the past messages posted in this website, one person paid RM6 per day and som other miscellenous charges too.

So, can anyone tell me the FACT?
and from the time of departure (LA) to arrival (KLIA), any other "hidden charges" and how much are they?

I need to have Mack's toys and blanket to comfort him. Also, how could i fit in 2 bowls into the crate? I'm worrying that the water and food will split everywhere. Is there any alternate options instead of bowls? like "sucker" for water?

Hi ,

You can place some toy in the crate. Think carefully, the DVS will have no control on the stuff that you are going to place in the crate but you must of course meet airlines requirement.

The small water container is normally come with the crate when you purchase it. I think airline ppl will help you to secure that container on the door of the crate and then attach a funnel on the door (external) with a small tube leading to the container. Water will be added to that container from time to time during the flight. Feeding is definitely minimal during the flight.

The estimated cost of clearing your Mack in KLIA as follow :-
  • Pay about RM 25.00 to ecommerce department for the preparation of custom papers
  • Pay RM 25.00 (RM50.00 after midnight) to DVS's office at KLIA
  • Pay about RM 25.00 to MAS for Delivery Order
  • Pay about RM 75.00 for quarantine your dog in Quarantine Station.

Microchips [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi there~

Mack will fly back to M'sia on 3rd January.
I've got the import permit,
and just brought him to the local vet for check up and to get the health certificate.

*BUT (i don't know why there's always a "but"Mad)
I can't have the cert ready by today!
they have to send the forms and check (payment can only made by check) and other papers to the state office in order to get the foreign certificate, then once they approve it, they'll send the cert to the vet and then i go and pick up.
Hey, doesn't it sounds like at least a week or so for the procedures??? and they require the cert to be valid no more than 7-10days??? GOSH~

Anyway, things still need to be solved, just a bit ma-ma-fan-fanUnsure
i wasn't being told about all these, they just told me what i need is bring the dog in and get the cert.
it's not my fault, so they'll have to pay for the "pos laju" and make sure i'll get it by the 2nd jan.

Oh yeah~Shocked
Mack also need to be Microchipped too. which i wasn't aware when i went tru the related offical websites. I'm not sure if he still need to get another chip in M'sia? from MKA?
Poor Mack~! He was being shaved a BIG SPOT on his back , an inch away from his neck. No more handsome look ler.... BALD now.Frown

Nobody told me he need to be microchipped in order to be imported. (?)

Just to share my "last minute" preparation-experience here so that others won't repeat the same "mistakes".

Hi ,

If Mack is a pedigree dog and if you want to register Mack locally with MKA, The Malaysian Kennel Association, you must quickly apply for EXPORT PEDIGREE from AKC (I guess). The Microchip number need to be on the EXPORT PEDIGREE of course.

When you return from US, you need the Export Pedigree when you are registering Mack locally. Please make sure that whoever clear Mack on your behalf keep all documentation such as Airway Bill, Receipt for payment made to DVS & Quarantine Station, Copy of Import Permit, Health Certificate. You need all these for your submission to MKA locally.

Um. I just signed those papers and they have sent everything to the "state office". I galnced at it once before i signed, but didn't pay attention to the Export Pedigree thingy... or any AKC registered ID on the paper. I don't have chance to keep a copy of those papers before they sent coz they were rushing to post ot for me.
Now, the chip is already inserted. I don't know what's "stored" inside the chip. But there's a certificate to verify that Mack is "chipped" and there's a ID number on the cert as well as the tag hanging on his collar now, but I'm not sure is the ID number same as AKC registration ID? or just a reference number?

I've never learned about this "export pedigree".
If i'm not going to have mack register to MKA, then it won't harm anything without the Export Pedigree registration, right?
Or, it is a MUST?

When the rules required that your imported animal be quarantined, you have no choice and will have to go through the quarantine process. What I did was when my dog was there, I visit him everyday to walk him and feed him a meal myself. Teh condition there is not too good but there is little thing that you can do. Since Mack is an adult, he should be able to go through the process without much problem.

It's okay that the environment of the quarantine station not too good as long as it's not that bad to cause any illness or discomfort to Mack. What to expect? it's not a HOME though.....
The most important thing afterall is:
I can get Mack back home SMOOTHLY. no problem getting tru airlines, custom, and the quarantine station. Other than that, hopefullt there will be no any HIDDEN charge that I'm nto aware of NOW.

Thanks for everyone's help here!

Will let you guys know about what happen during the flight and the quarantine period later on.

May I know if there will be someone in the baggage/cargo area (during the flight) who feed Mack water? If yes, how often will they do it?

Thanks,

Airline staff will add water to the water container during the flight and however often they do it, I am not sure.

When one of my dogs reach KL a few months ago, the water bowl was filled with kibble and I think they added kibble during the last section of the flight. I guess only water is given to the dog during most of the travelling time.

I thought dogs are not allowed to eat during flight?
So, shall I prepare some kibbles, say keep them in a plastic container? (so the staff could feed my dog whenever it's necessary)

I am not sure MAS will feed your Mack during the flight but there is no harm to prepare some for them. Mack definitely is able to survive only with water for the 18 Hours flight

I think the airline staff add kibble into our dog RON's water bowl at that time was because he was still a young pup at 4 months +.

Mack was doing fine during the road trip, 7 hours drive from my town to Minneapolis. What a big relief!Wink. Hope he will be doing good for the flights as well. We went to Petsmart just now, Mack behaved like "dai-heong-lei"Blush..... he sniff and sniff around the whole shop. What a wonderful time to shop with him together, really my first time orh~
But, I didn't get the stainless steel bowl that could hang on the crate dog, I only able to find a pair of plastic bowl, also can hang-on the crate door, but don't feel like it's secured and deep/big enough for Mack. Will do last minute shopping tomorrow morning before departure.

Anyway, thanks for everyone's help and suggestions!

Hi All!
Mack was doing very well during his road trip and the 7hours flight from Minneapolis to LA. Everything went smoothly and he was just OKAY. When transit in LA, I managed to wlk him at a garden just nexty to the international airport. He was so excited for the fresh air and the greens! Wink Ya~ that was the time for him to pee & poo. But the MAS service wasn't that satisfied.... i mean when we were at the ticketing counterFrown they don't really treat my Mack Mack as "VIP" (very important pet) as those americans will do. But he still "perform" very well being.... gave me quite some "faces" in the airport!Tongue
Hope he'll be fine for the 18 hours flight.
(crossing my fingers~)

I'm planning to go home soon, miss Mack so much!
hope i could bring mack and meet you all soon!

Hi allSmile

Mack has finally reached KL on Sunday around 12:30pm!!! LaughLaughLaugh

He's doing very well and stay calm (before my friends reaching his crate)Tongue

Too bad, M'sia Quarantine authorities didn't allow him to be released from the crate, he had to be inside the crate during the time transfering from the terminal to the quarantine station.
(he can walk anywhere in US airports!Crazy)

Right now, I'm still not sure if he's kept in the station, coz by the time i called my friends, i was told maybe they could bring Mack "home" right away.
The reason?? not sure..... what I knew is..... "nobody" work on Sunday, only one indian officer there and he said it should be "Okay"...

Well, will let you guys know more updated news soon!

Hi ,

Great to know that Mack arrived in KLIA safely. Without having to go through the quarantine period of 7 days is definitely good for Mack and just incase you wish to re register Mack locally, you may want to get to clearance letter from Quarantine Station that exempt Mack from the quarantine process.

Normally when imported dogs arrive at KLIA, they will be brought to Animal Hotel and right there, you are normally allowed to take your dog out for a short wall before it is transferred to the Quarantine Station.

Cheers

Anyway, I was expected for it, so... no big deal...
Mack is really good in taking care of himself, he didn't pee or poo inside the crate throughout the whole LONG journey. But when my bf touch him, can feel that Mack's coat isn't as "good" as when he's in US. Wonder whyCrazy.

Remember the AKC export cert that you mentioned to me before? I didn't manage to get it before sending mack home. So, you think I could do it now in US even if he's already in KL now? I really want him to be MKA-registered. Hope this is not too late...Angelic

Yes, since Mack has left US soil, you can definitely apply for EXPORT PEDIGREE from AKC and use it later for registration with MKA.

When Mack reach KLIA, it is a total change in weather and it is really hot here. With survival instint, Mack will expect to start shedding very soon and he need to shed to able to cope with the local weather. The winter coat will have to go for a change. I think you will see a lot of shedding for the next one month or two before the coat will grow back again.

Yeah~

Mack started his shedding period just 3-4 days before he flew back to KL. When we were in our road trips, he shed until the whole car seat with his fur, and finished up 2 rolls of the "fur stickers" (to remove hairs/fur from any surface).
When you said "the winter coat will have to go...", you mean he'll have no more double-coating?? and just left ONE coat to cope with the hot weather?
(coz what i learned is GR are double-coated to protect him from severe cold condition)

Re: [mackmack] Quarantine [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Ying,

My friend was there at the station for the last 2 days for her dog and I asked her to look out for Mack and see how Mack is doing at the station. Great to know that Mack is doing well and has left the quarantine station.

Well we will have a chance to meet each other with that friend of mine in the future gathering.

As whether your dog is good enough for conformation show, you may wish to check your Mack against the breed standard of AKC and The Kennel Club as follow :-

AKC
http://www.akc.org/...recbreeds/golden.cfm

The Kennel Club
http://www.the-kennel-club.org.uk/...dogs/gundog/g819.htm

Mack definitely looks good in the picture. The best thing on MIPE show is that there will be 2 shows, each on 15th and 16th of March 2003 in KL and there is no harm to try Mack out in those two shows. You should know roughly where your Mack stand after the shows.

You may also want to try out Mack on Obedience when you come back to KL. Golden Retriever is an intelligent breed and training Mack will not be difficult. It will be funs to train Mack for obedience.

Cheers

How is the smell of the stools. Does it smell like dog food or the smell of usual stools. The former will indicate that there is an indigestion problem.

If I'm there for Mack, sure i won't smell it!

But he is active all the time, doesn't look like SICK.
Could it becoz of he drink too much of water?

No, Mack is not in diarrhea, he poo regularly, morning and evening, just the "texture" not quite normal only...
My family and relatives used to be DOCTOR to our own dog during the past 2 decades, po-chai-yuen and panadol... but my experience told me that this is not right at all. My uncle's black lab died few months ago becoz of delay to bring him to the vet, and by that time to give him pet-medication, it was too late.Frown most of our dogs are pure bred, and my uncle felt so bad and regret that he didn't bring Ben to the vet at first time.... really "sayang" to lost such a lovely lab.

Very true indeed!!Whenever my dog is sick,I would instantly want to bring the doggie to the vet...unless it's told by the vet that they cannot do anything....so use 'traditional house med'.....

I guess you should tell any one of your family members to bring him to the vet if the problem still persists...

Losing a dog is like losing a family member...I have experienced that before...when i was younger,I had this dog (can't remember what breed but she was very white and had long hair)..and she died because she ran out of the house and got run over by a car...the experience was really saddening that I cried and cried....sigh....live is really too short to have so many regrets...I suggest you bring him to see the vet...and things will get better after being examined by the vet...

right now, we'll bring our pets to the vet whenever there's health problems. But right now, I think Mack is jsut in the period of adjusting the environment change. I call everyday and night.... from what observed, he's getting better, but a bit "down" when his owner is not besides.

Hi Ying,

I was at the quarantine station on last Saturday to see my friend's dog and the stool was also very watery. My friend brought a vet along into the quarantine station and the pet apparently found the dog to be normal and may just be having stomack upset. The VET found the dog's temperature to be normal and the dog remain active. The stools was very watery and has a smell of dog food that indicate digestive problem. The dog has since left the quarantine station.

Anyway, the above is the case for that dog. Monitor Mack closely and if the need arise, get Mack visit a vet will definitely bring you a lot comfort.

Cheers

Thanks Khoo Smile

The case of your friend's dog sounds very familiar to Mack's case. Mack's stool still watery, but it's better than before. yeah... that's was what i thought too -- stomach upset. And he has changed from "puppy growth" kibbles to the Adult dog kibbles... he seems to feel the difference.... not KEEN to the food as he used to be.
Anyway, plan to bring him to the vet for blood test and stool test, and might make an appoinment for him to have heartworm-vaccination/medication (for prevention) coming soon.

Hi Mack,
Its not unusual for dogs to have watery or loose stool for a few days after arriving from overseas.
Its because of the change in the water, temp and maybe a bit of stress but mainly the water.
Its normal ,I won't worry abt it too much.

Elly

Guess what??Wink
we registered to this site on the same day! -- Oct 22.
I was just one hour before you!Tongue
So what do you know about MAS pet service? mind to share?
As for airfare, I paid $50 from MN to LA, then $218 from LA to KL. Have to pay for the road trip too. For other expenses, I spent $105 for vet visitaion (include check-up, health-cert, microchips,etc.). Then I have to provide the crate and bowls. Bought quite some accessories form Petsmart.

Then RM$69 for quaratine and RM$100 for grooming.

And...
lot's of snacks from US! Guess I never hak-bok my gua.... already tried my best to provide him the best i could ler....

In my impression,
just my own thoughts here.... I think JAL provides better pet service then MAS. MAS is not bad, just that they gave me the feeling of they will just treat my dog as a DOG, not like Frontier Airlines I took from MN to LA, that company really treats my dog as their customer, who paid the airfare and really get the service. at least I'm satisfied with Frontier more than MAS. Anyway, nobody abuse my mack.Tongue I'm just being too.... (that one)

mack is really handsome, is he naughty? i like mischivious cheeky dogs... more fun to play with Tongue

my fren's fren owns a three-legged g-retriever, three-legged didn't stop her from being naughty n active... the name is charlotte, very lovely. too bad i don hav the pic. chorlotte's b/ground was sad, the breeder wanted to put her to sleep in a vet clinic coz she's handicapped n no buyers outhere, then this fren (of my fren) was at the clinic n she willing to adopt her~~ touching.

we need more kind-hearted ppl outhere, i've seen many abusive cases n some cruel scenes bout dogs outhere, just so sad. so i always agree spaying the pets if u r not the breeder, even if u r, pls b a responsible one.

cheers

Hello , I brought my dog from LAX to KLIA last year. It was worth it but I would not do it again especially for a young dog. Qaurantine is no fun, even for a short stint of 7 days. I would suggest giving a treatment of frontline before your dog leaves. Our dog was loaded with ticks after 7 days at KLIA qt. Also call them ALLOT ! Ask about how your dog is doing. Visit as often as you can. Visit at least twice, make sure your dog is let out to run and is not kept in pen while they clean it. My dog is twice as shy after being in quarantine, it really does affect them.

To those who are going to import a dog try doing it from a country that has no qaurantine, like NZ & AU.

I'm from northen cal bay area, where are you from?

Good Luck and all the best :)

Hi llamasonic~ Thanks for your sharing. I've already sent my GR home on 3rd January 2003. And he's now in KL while I'm still in the Sillicon Valley. Feel sorry for your dog's importation to M'sia. However, It wasn't that bad for my GR. Although I was not there with him along the flight from LAX to KLIA or after he went back and stayed in the quarantine station, But i did have friends to visit him everyday, walk him, feed him and asked a lot of question just to bug the workers there. only spent 5 days in the quarantine station but still ought to pay for 7 days. Right after was discharged from the station, his co-owner who in KL brought him to the groomer. After grooming, straight headed to the vet in USJ. The vet was such a nice person... he found no tick on and didn't charge for any fee... not even a single cent! You mentioned that your dog was twice as shy after the quarantine, but mack was a bit different. He acted like soooo relief and excited and of course.... HYPER after being quarantined.
Smile Anyway, welcome back to the forum~! your previous thread about sending your dog to KL does helped a lot when i first joined this forum for the sake of " 's return~".

May I know when do you plan to have the importation?

A good thing that you travel with your pet form Aussie is: BooBoo doesn't need to be quarantined upon arrival~Smile

MAS airlines do allow pets in cabin depends on its size. You may check their universal website instead of the M'sia site (without the .my). I would suggest you to call up the airlines customer service for more details. You chould be able to get the number from Yellow Pages rite? if not, just call the airport counter and ask them to direct you to the rite person for such Q&A.

The import permit form can be downloaded form the website but it must be applied IN m'sia. You may try to call the authority for the details.

By the way, to upload photos in the gallery, you may got "PHOTO GALLERY" and sign up a membership there. I think you have to wait for the approval to join, get the password, then only able to upload photos. (anyone to correct me if i'm wrong~)

i think the pics are still pending for approval. just be patient. by the way make sure you have uploaded them in the appropriate category, i.e the appropriate dog breeds, but not just simply under "member gallery". Please read the intructions carefully.

Hi Wink

Thanks for your help! Actually, I haven't make up my mind whether to bring Bibi back to M'sia or Taiwan(my bf is from Taiwan & i'll move to there later), but for sure I wouldn't abandon him or rehome him in the US. Here are some questions I wanna ask. If Bibi is going to M'sia. Does he need to be microchipped to enter M'sia? Does he still need to get another chip in M'sia? What was the condition in the quarantine station in M'sia? Regarding to the health certificate, when is the appropriate time to apply for it? Does it have a validation period? Besides, do I need to prepare a description cert of Bibi? Just in case I might wanted to bring him back to M'sia in May or August this year, does he need to be fully vaccinated, rabies to apply for the import permit?(he already has 2 sets of distemper vaccines so far, will be taking the 3rd one next wednesday). What is the rabies validation period? (I heard that rabies should be taken 30 days after and within one year period to enter from a foriegn country)...Does he require any special (additional) vaccinations or whatever inspection to enter Malaysia? Thanks in advance...Smile

Re: [lovemybibi] Super Dog Lover here! [In reply to] Can't Post

Wow~!!! You have already asked all-questiones-in-one-post and those were all my concern when i sent back from US.Wink

If you are planning to send bibi back to Malaysia.....
1. Does he need to be microchipped to enter M'sia?
-NOT REQUIRED BUT HIGHTLY RECOMMENDED. COZ FROM TIME TO TIME.... POLICY IMPOSED TO LIVE ANIMAL WOULD BE CHANGED. GET READY FOR EVERYHTING BETTER THAN SORRY LATER.Smile

2. Does he still need to get another chip in M'sia?
- IF HE GETS HIS MICROCHIP IN US, HE NEED NOT TO TAKE ANOTHER CHIP IN M'SIA.

3. What was the condition in the quarantine station in M'sia?
- I DON'T KNOW AS I NEVER BEEN THERE BEFORE. Blush BUT HEARD THAT..... "NOT TOO GOOD AS WHAT YOU EXPECT BUT ALSO NOT THAT BAD EITHER IF YOU CAN VISIT YOUR DOG EVERYDAY DURING THE QUARANTINE PERIOD".
Laugh

4. Regarding to the health certificate, when is the appropriate time to apply for it?
- HEALTH CERT VALIDS FOR ONLY 7-10 DAYS IN US DEPENDS ON EACH STATE'S REQUIREMENT.
- HOWEVER, THE IMPORT PERMIT (TO APPLY FROM MSIA) VALIDS FOR ONE MONTH.
- SO.... WOULD SUGGEST YOU TO HAVE YOUR FAMILY/FRIEND TO GET THE "IMPORT PERMIT" IN KL, RM5, NEED VACCINATION RECORD WHICH YOU MAY FAX TO THEM.
- THEN CONSULT AND MAKE APPOINMENT WITH YOUR VET TO HAVE THE HEALTH TEST & REQUIRED VACCINATIONS DOEN ABOUT 10 DAYS BEFORE DEPARTURE. *THE VET HAS TO SEND THE TEST RESULT TO FEDERAL OR STATE DEPARTMENT (FORGOT WHICH ONE) TO CERTIFY THE HEALTH TEST AND SEND BACK THE CERT TO THE VET. SO.... ALL THESE TAKE TIME, EVEN IF YOU FEDEX/UPS, MAKE SURE THE PROCEDURES HAVE NO CONFLICT WITH PUBLIC HOLIDAYS.*Smile

5. Does it have a validation period?
- ANSWERED.Smile 7-10 DAYS.

6. Besides, do I need to prepare a description cert of Bibi?
- IF THIS IS FOR APPLYING THE IMPORT PERMIT, ASK YOUR FAMILY/FRIEND TO GET THE FORM AND FAX TO YOU. FILL UP THE PARTICULARS OF YOUR DOG AND ALSO SENDER'S DETAILS THEN FAX IT TO THE "HAIWAN XXX DEPARTENT" (NOT SURETongue)

7. Just in case I might wanted to bring him back to M'sia in May or August this year, does he need to be fully vaccinated, rabies to apply for the import permit?
- IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN, THERE'S A CHECKLIST OF WHICH VACCINES HAVE TO BE TAKEN DURING THE HEALTH TEST, INCLUDES RABBIES & BORDERTELLA (?)=KENNEL COUGH.
- SINCE YOU ARE PLANNING TO SEND HIM BACK DURING SUMMER TIME, PLEASE CHECK WITH THE AIRLINES IF THEY HAVE DIFFERENT POLICY DURING SUMMER SEASON. AS WHAT I KNOW.... LIVE ANIMAL CAN ONLY BE IN THE CARGO UNDER CERTAIN CONDITION, SUCH AS "GOOD WEATHER". TOO COLD, NO. TOO WARM, NO.Crazy

8. What is the rabies validation period?
- FOR PUPPY, THE FIRST TIME RABBIES JAB LAST FOR ONE YEAR, THEN YOU NEED THE SECOND RABBIES VACCINE IN THE FOLLOWING YEAR, AND THIS 2ND ONE CAN LAST FOR 3 YEARS. IF YOU'VE ALREADY HAD BIBI TAKEN RABBIES VACCINE, THEN SHOW THE AUTHORITY OF THE VACCINATION-RECORD.... THEN SHOULD BE "OKAY".Smile

9. Does he require any special (additional) vaccinations or whatever inspection to enter Malaysia?
- ONLY THE HEALTH TEST. BUT YOU HAVE TO PROVIDE THE VET THE LIST OF "TO DO THINGS..,.,.. (TO IMPORT DOGS INTO MALAYSIA)", CAN GET IT FROM INTERNET.Smile JUST OD A SEARCH ON THE SUBJECT.

Hi Smile

Thanks for your time and effort for answering all of my questions!

As for 4) Regarding to the health certificate, when is the appropriate time to apply for it?
- HEALTH CERT VALIDS FOR ONLY 7-10 DAYS IN US DEPENDS ON EACH STATE'S REQUIREMENT.

I am residing in San Francisco, California. Which state did you apply the health cert for Mack?

Cheers...
