cleaning puppies face

Hi...as this is the first time owning a puppy, I had a friend to help me give Bubbles a bath about two weeks ago. but now, as she had been sick, I've been told by the vet no baths. I do manage to wipe her down with a warm damp towel...though she hates it..will start growling. But I have big problems cleaning up her face.first, her whachamacallit stuff beside her eyes has harden..I've a hard time cleaning it up and she hates it. Then comes to the fur all around her face..and esp. around her mouth. The multi vitamin drops Vet prescribed smells so much like "Bovrill"....so now, her face smells of "Bovrill" and fur is matted and slightly stiff. But she bit my finger really hard when I tried wiping her face.. So..please..how do I clean her face with all my fingers still intact?? And what about all those cologne and powders for inbetween baths...are they good for puppies? I've tried the powder but Bubbles seems "dusty" after that. What do you all do inbetween baths? My daughter smells of Bubbles now..so, that's no good from the stares people give her when she goes out after carrying Bubbles.Crazy
